I served with Philip at Phoenix Base in Baghdad. He was a great, humorous guy and professional in the midst of all the stress and chaos of those days. His loss was a shock to us all at MNSTC-I, and I fondly remember him every Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Prayers for his family over all these years. LTC(R) Weiss

It's now been 7 years and I still remember the first time I meet Phil. I was one off the team members looking after him on missions. He would always be one off the lads laughing and joking with us the day it happened will stop with me for the rest off my life. Even knowing him for a short time he made a big impression on me and my team mates. He risked his life to make other peoples lives better him and my two teams mates that died with him will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family.

Today I watched a movie, The Lost Valentine, and it brought a memory of Cheryl and the entire family as they bravely brought Phil home. We must continue to remember all of our brave men and women who have served and are serving our nation to preserve liberty -- and their families who lovingly support them on the home front. It was an honor for me to have worked with the Murphy-Sweet family during this time and to witness their incredible resilience and love. Every Easter my thoughts and prayers turn to them, knowing that the Resurrection is their healing. May God's Love continue to grace all. With Love and gratitude, Cathy Partusch

My dad was serving with Commander Murphy at the time he was killed in Iraq. I wanted to say thank you for his service and that I am grateful for the ultimate sacrifice he made that day over 5 years ago. I feel lucky because my dad was suppose to go with the commander that day. My dad explained how he was killed and I am grateful to God that he decided not to go, but I also feel sorrow for you and that you have to live without him. Thank you for your sacrifice Commander Murphy and Happy Holidays to your family.

Dear Murphy-Sweet family,
My dad was working with your dad the day he was killed on Iraq. He was a Major in the USAF at the time. I didn't learn about your dads death until this year from my mom, then from my dad. I wanted to say tonight that I am very grateful for his service on his deployment there. Also, you have my sympathies because my dad was suppose to be with him. I am very sorry though and thank you for your dads service.

I was with Philip at Camp Phoenix in Iraq in 2007. We talked about having three kids and missing home and the irony of a Navy guy serving in a desert. Shortly after, he didn't come back from a trip out to the locals. He was a good person; I think of him often, his wife and children, and hope that they find peace. To them I say your husband and father was one of the people that makes this country great. One Army guy in Indiana appreciates his sacrifice. v/r LTC Murphy, (ret.)

CDR Murphy-sweet was my division officer on board the USS Dwight Eisenhower and I have many fond memories as I worked for him the entire time he was on the Ike, First he loved his family and he cared for people deeply, Sep 10 1999 my daughter was born and the ship was going underway in three days but my finance who I later married was pregnant with our first child together and she was having complications and after she had my daughter, nia she was very sick and I had to get underway, my leave chit never made it to his desk, he came up to me and congratulated me and ask what am I doing here and i explain the situation and he said leave immediatly and I will take care of everything. I was almost in tears as I left the boat but thats the type of man he was. The 2000 cruise came along and we were in portugal and he had lost a lot of weight and his ring fell off his finger and he was looking everywhere for his ring and I helped instantly and after four hours of looking I found his ring and he kept thanking me and I said Mr Murphy sweet thank you sir, I was just glad I could pay you back this favor. May god bless his family

My deepest sympathies to the family of CDR Murphysweet. I went to boot camp with Philip. I recall his last name was longer than mine by a couple letters. We were recruits in Company 070..RTC, Great Lakes and later in Hospital Corp School. I remember Philip as kind to a fault and always with a boyish smerk. Boot Camp was during the winter and he had what seemed like permanent red cheeks.I cant quite recall the last time we saw each other but he was an Officer and I was a Chief. We congratulated each other and said our farewells. Wow, this was a difficult piece of news to process today....RIP shipmate. Heaven now has a jewel and America lost one.

I started today off by reading a CNN article about Arlington Cemetary. I was in total shock and disbelief when I came across Phi's name. I searched the net and found his obituary and I must admit, by heart is saddened by the loss of such a wonderful person. I served with Phil onboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and on a trip to the USS Emory S. Land in 2005 I once again ran across his smiling and friendly face. While serving with him on the IKE, there was never a time that he didn't offer his advice and "common sense" approach to a hectic situation. He was one of the kindest and most caring people I'd ever met on the IKE. I'm so sorry for your loss but please know that he touched (in a very positive way) the lives of many people. He will always be remembered in my heart as a wonderful man. God Bless you. I will always keep his memory alive in my heart.

In 1986, for 18 brutal months Phil and I suffered and persevered through a highly intense academic and physical training regimen called Broadened Opportunities for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST).
The rigorous military training proved our mettle and brought us together.
I didn't see Phil that much. We were in separate companies residing in different barracks and when not working out, I was always hitting the books. I had no choice; I was scared to death that I would fail and get sent home.
I wished I saw Phil more, and I feel especially close to him now.
I get especially emotional every time I see or hear about one of our own who didn't make it back home alive.
Today Phil is buried in our Nation's most sacred shrine, and like all the War Heroes who have come home to rest, I can always pay tribute to them in person and through prayers.

Dear Cheryl,
Bob and I just heard about Phil. I received an web invite for the alumni website at NPS. As I perused the latest pictures I saw that you were recently at NPS where you spoke of Phil. I was shocked...he was so close to returning. We told Robbie and Genevieve that Olivia, Seth and Lauren lost thier Dad. They are, as we are, very saddened. I'm so very glad that we got together when I was at the Army War College. We cherish your friendship even though we've been at a distance. So hard to find the right words...and it's been over a year for you and the kids. If Bob and I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to call. Please know that you and the children are in our thoughts and prayers. We will visit Phil's grave in Arlington the next time we are in DC. He was a great man, loving husband and father. Love to you all.

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

Cmdr. Murphy-Sweet was a counselor to me aboard the ship USS Emory S Land. I just found out the news of his passing minutes ago from a shipmate. This has come as a total shock and I can't believe that I am making this entry. He was a great man who was never too busy to sit and talk with a newly enlisted sailor. To talk to an officer of his caliber really meant a lot to me. I am truly sorry for the family. This proves that this war is unbiased because he really was one of the good ones.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I am unsure if they knew each other, but my brother was in the National Guard out of Harrisburg. I know they are together now and are in a better place. They are true hero's by giving the ultimate sacrifice to their country. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. If there is anything I can do please feel free to contact me. Sincerely Daniel Thomas

Commander Murphy-Sweet:
Phil thou we have only talked a few times, I am sorry for not getting the chance to know you better. But in the time that our daughters where in the same Day Care I got to see you and the affect you had on one of your three children. Thank you Phil for serving this great country of ours and the dedication you have shown to the Navy. I am sorry that you had to pay the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and safety here at home but now your fight is over, lay down your arms and sit back for you have passed your torch of freedom to your brothers and sisters in the military overseas and to your family, friends and every person your life ever touched here at home. To Cheryl, Olivia, Seth and Lauren, with the deepest sympathy from my family to yours. Your family has suffered a great loss, but remember Phil was a man of strong beliefs, a powerful will, he was an honorable officer of the US Navy but most important of all he was an honorable and loving husband and father.

As the mother of a son (my only child)who is enlisted in the Army, I want to send my condolences.
April 10, 2007
To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

It is with the deepest sadness that I ask the family and friends of this brave young Soldier to accept the offer of my most sincere and heart felt condolences. I hope that you know that your loss is shared and mourned by millions of Americans. Most of whom you don’t know and in all probability will never meet. We sincerely appreciate the sacrifices made by your patriot.
Freedom is not free; it is paid for by our heroes, and for those who fight for it, Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know! This soldier made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
I know the pain parents feel when they loose a child. I lost a son 19 years ago. It is a pain that defies description. It is a pain that never goes away. It is a pain that will never end. It is a pain that is all consuming.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
May God Bless and keep you today, tomorrow and forever!
Rest in Peace brave soldier; you did your duty with great honor, dedication, distinction and in the highest traditions of our great country.
