Christopher H. Harame, BUC USN Ret., 92, passed away April 17 from a long illness.
Chris, a native of Pocatello and graduate of Pocatello High School, joined the United States Navy in 1938 where he became a hard-hat diver and a Chief Gunner's Mate. He was aboard the USS Detroit at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After WWII Chris went on to join the Seabees Reserve from which he retired.
Chris married Cusina Zaccardi in 1943 and they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on March 21.
After returning to Pocatello in 1945, with his wife Cusina, he became a master carpenter and cabinet maker until his retirement. His handiwork is still found in many businesses and homes throughout Idaho.
Chris was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association, VFW, Fleet Reserve Association and was a plankholder of the U.S. Navy Memorial. He was also a member of the Honor Guard for many years. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and past worshipful Master of Portneuf 18.
In his early days he loved to fish and hunt and he authored a book about his experiences in the Navy entitled, "On the Lee Side of My Navy Life".
Chris is survived by Cusina, his wife of 70 years, his daughters, Lynn Flickinger (Rick) and Leslie Haramis, granddaughters Kristin Flickinger and Cathy Wellner (Matt) and great-grandsons Owen and Ben. He is also survived by his sister Melpa of Illinois.
A Funeral Mass will celebrated, Monday, April 22, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in the Holy Spirit Catholic Community, St. Anthony Chapel, 504 North 7th Ave., Pocatello, with Father John Worster, Celebrant. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello, 232-0542. Interment will follow services in the Mountain View Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the Blackfoot American Legion Post 23.
