John Moon, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025, with his eternal companion Bonnie by his side and surrounded by family. He slipped through the veil after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
John was born on September 11, 1940, to Jack and Esther Rueckert Moon. He was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, and graduated from South High School. As a young man he served faithfully in the Uruguay Montevideo Mission, laboring in both Uruguay and Argentina. He met his sweetheart at a stake dance on August 26, 1964. The very next morning, John told his mother that he had met the girl he was going to marry. On January 15, 1965, they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.
John earned a B.A. in Business Management from the University of Utah. After a brief time in Colorado with Procter & Gamble, he chose to pursue a career in teaching seminary. He taught seminary for the next 10 years. Eight years at Blackfoot High School and two years as Principal of the Snake River High School Seminary. He cherished reconnecting with former students throughout his life. John also earned a master's degree from Brigham Young University. In 1977, he purchased Odell's Furniture, beginning a new chapter as a business owner.
John was a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, dedicated throughout his life to both learning and teaching the Gospel. He faithfully served in many callings, including as Bishop of the Moreland 6th Ward beginning in 1988. At the time of his passing, he was serving as a temple worker in the Pocatello Idaho Temple and as Patriarch of the Blackfoot, Idaho Northwest Stake. John found great joy in attending the temple and performing sacred ordinances on behalf of his ancestors. He especially treasured the opportunities to serve with the youth and to work alongside his fellow temple workers. His deepest desire was to serve the Lord throughout his life on earth and then be called to continue that service in heaven.
John is survived by his eternal companion Bonnie Elizabeth Ottesen Moon, his children Melisa Moon, Katherine (Gary) Fuller, Alison (Bret) Wilde, Aaron (Amanda) Moon, David (Shannon) Moon, Deborah (Brady) Fox, Charity (Spencer) Archibald, Adam (Allison) Moon, Spencer Moon, Michelle (Kyle) Ashton, Matthew Moon, Christian (Rebecca) Moon, 40 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
