Dear Dear Ardys and family, Karl was one of my favorites. Such a brilliant, joyful, loving man who always made such wonderful, interesting conversation. He will always be in my heart and so will you. All peace and love.

Karl Holte was one of the Special Professors that taught so much more than just their subject. He taught about life! I do not know how many times I have used his words, his methods, his tests....geez...I can hear him in my head.
How many of you can hear say, "When you see bear grass, you know you're in a pretty place!"
Well, Karl, I hope you are rolling in beargrass and syringas!

Dr. Holte was my favorite professor at ISU and he positively influenced my life in many ways. He encouraged me to apply for my first botany field job and later to become a high school science teacher. When interacting with students or designing lessons, I would often ask myself,"How would Karl approach this?" He was a gifted educator. He never lost the excitement for botany or the beauty of nature. And his curiosity and love of learning was contagious.
I will never forget his evening classes. He would roll in a gurney loaded with popcorn and other snacks to keep us energized. And during tests, he would make us waffles with homemade syrups and jams.
I will miss him greatly.

Karl Holte absolutely enriched my life through the wonderful botony classes that I took from him at ISU (1986-1990). I also participated in one of his infamous Spring Break trips to the desert southwest, and it still brings back priceless memories. Karl made learning so much fun! I used the amazing information he taught me in the programs that I gave to park visitors while serving as a Ranger Naturalist at Grand Teton National Park (1988-2000). In a small way, I helped pass along Karl´s delightful and creative legacy. He was definitely a one-in-a-million person! I will always treasure his teaching skills, his passion for the natural environment, his warmth and humanity, plus his friendship. My condolences to Ardys, and other folks who experienced Karl´s wonderful presence!

I was so lucky to know and learn from this beautiful human. He was the reason I studied botany. His passion and enthusiasm was so delightfully contagious. The education he helped give me allowed for many amazing adventures in field botany jobs for me. I have had an absolutely amazing time. I have never once regretted switching my major. Karl begged me not to. He said I would never make any money! He was right about that.
I'll always remember the spring break trip to the desert southwest. He organized several but I was only ever able to attend one. He surprised me with a birthday party.
He'll always hold a special place in my heart. Big hugs to Ardys. Cheers with a cup of kickapoo joy juice to an incredible man who touched the hearts and minds of many. Rest in peace friend.

Karl's enthusiasm, good humor, wild side and joy of teaching botany will be remembered by me as long as I live. A life well lived; he was a positive influence of his friends and the botanical community at large.
