Ronald Nicholas
Ronald William Nicholas, 88, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2014 of natural causes. Ron was a friend to all who knew him. Ron was born in a log cabin in Malad, Idaho on March 28, 1926 to Dewey William and Relia Elizabeth Nicholas. He was the second of three brothers (Wallace and Mark). His mother passed away when he was two, and from then he was raised by his grandparents, William and Margaret Nicholas. He worked on his farther's farm with his brothers, grandfather and father.
He attended school in Malad, graduating from Malad High School in 1944. He enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the Iwo Jima battle group. After the battle he witnessed the reenactment of the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and then enrolled at the University of Idaho. Ron graduated with a BS in Business in 1950 and started work for the State Insurance Fund. In college he made a life long friend in Don Paige and Don introduced him to his sister Ruth. Ron and Ruth were married in 1952 and spent 62 great years together. They have three children, Donna Wycoff (Norm) of Portland, Gary (Mary Johnston) of Seattle, and Brian (Christine) of Eagle, Idaho, plus four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
In 1955 Ron purchased Pops Delivery Service and he began his lifelong career in the moving business. He expanded the business into Nicholas Moving and Storage, which he owed and operated until 1996. After he sold the business he worked part-time assisting the new owners in any way he could. He was active in many social organizations. He was a member of the American Legion. He was elected president of the Pocatello Kiwanis Club and was on the Board of Directors of the Pocatello Rotary Club. He was active in the State Affairs of the Greater Pocatello Chamber of Commerce. He was active for many years in the Idaho Movers Association and served as its President for several years. In his younger days he was active in the United Methodist Church.
Memorials in Ron's memory may be given to the First United Methodist Church building fund.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 23, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the United Methodist Church, corner of 15th Ave. and Clark St., Pocatello. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Sunday evening in the Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello, and one hour prior to service in the church Monday. Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello, 232-0542. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.cornelisonfh.com.
