Carroll Meyer Obituary

Carroll Jason Meyer Carroll Jason Meyer passed away on July 4, 2007 in Boise, Idaho. He was born in 1920 in Giard Township near MacGregor, Iowa to Clifton Meyer and Milda Glesne. He married Darlene Wehrkamp on June 10, 1948. He graduated with distinction from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance degree in 1944 and began teaching at Boise Junior College in 1948. Prior to that he taught at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. He studied with concert pianist Cecil de Horvath in Chicago and Madame Ethel Leginska in Los Angeles. In 1965 he received a Master of Music degree from the University of Iowa. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Eta Sigma scholastic honor societies. He was elected to the National Guild of Piano Teachers Hall of Fame and was a member of the Boise Piano Guild for 59 years. He was honored for 50 years of membership in the Music Teachers National Association and was a founding member of the Idaho Music Teachers Association. He has performed with the Boise Civic Symphony, the Boise College Community Orchestra, Boise State University Orchestra and the Meridian Symphony performing major concertos by Beethoven, Brahms and Chopin. He performed Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" for the inaugural concert of the Morrison Center of the Performing Arts in 1984. He was equally renowned for his success in studio teaching having produced and inspired many students who went on to achieve professional success as well. Many of his students have won awards throughout the Treasure Valley as well as at state district and national levels. Upon his retirement in 1985 he was recognized for 37 years of service to Boise State University. He continued teaching throughout his retirement up until May of 2007. His hobbies and interests included fishing, hunting, horses, a cabin at Lake Cascade and his beloved dogs. He is survived by Darlene, his wife of nearly 60 years; his daughter Gina and husband Garner and their children Ryan and Jessica; his son Bruce and wife Malea and their children Ross and Makelle; his sister Aileen Renkel, and his brothers Robert Meyer and John Meyer. Viewing will be at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Home at 5400 Fairview on Tuesday, July 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 11 at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church at 10th and State St. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Carroll Meyer Memorial Piano Scholarship Fund, in care of the Boise State University Foundation, 1910 University Drive, Boise, ID 83706. The family would like to thank St. Luke's Hospice and his many doctors for their conscientious care.

I was lucky enough to call Professor Meyer my teacher while still in junior high school. He was such a wonderful and kind man, and I learned much from him. The world has lost a huge talent. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. I am sure he is a part of God's orchestra now!
