Douglas Haight Obituary

DOUGLAS CAPELL HAIGHT 1944 ~ 2011 Douglas Capell Haight, 66, of Boise, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 9, 2011. He was born in San Francisco, CA, on April 20, 1944, to Lloyd Elison Haight of Oakley, Idaho, and Genevieve Crump Capell Haight of Robin, Idaho. In 1946, after World War II, Lloyd and Gene moved back to Pocatello where they lived from 1946 to 1951, when Lloyd became general counsel for the J. R. Simplot Company. Doug attended 1st grade school in Pocatello; 2nd thru 6th at the old Central Grade School behind the State of Idaho Capitol Building; and North Junior High. He was a 1962 graduate of Boise High, a fact he was proud of his entire life. He attended Boise Junior College and graduated from Idaho State University in 1967 with a degree in Business. He was active in Alpha Kappa Psi Business honorary, ISU student finance committee and Sigma Phi Epsilon. While at ISU, Douglas met Sharon Beaver, whom he married and had three wonderful children, Michael, Lisa, and Matthew. Doug always said the three greatest days of his life were the days his children were born. He was a loving and devoted father who spent hours coaching his kid's basketball teams, riding bikes, and attending countless recitals and games with his camera in hand. His children were a great source of happiness, comfort, and strength to him. He loves them very much. After college in 1967, Douglas became a stockbroker and trader in San Francisco, with the firm of Morgan, Olmstead, Kennedy and Gardner. In 1970, he moved back to Boise and worked for Jones & Company. He recruited Foster & Marshall of Seattle to Boise, which later came Shearson Lehman, and then Smith Barney. Douglas joked that in the last 32 years he had worked for three firms, had not moved himself, and had the same clients and desk he started with in 1973. For 29 years Doug played noon basketball at the downtown YMCA. He coached YBA youth basketball for 14 years, and played fast pitch softball. He loved golfing, reading, walking, riding bikes with his family, traveling, taking pictures, and his most favorite pastime - just hanging out with friends and visiting. In 1995, Douglas married his best friend, Claudia Butler. Together they enjoyed 16 years of happiness he thought he would never experience. They truly belonged with each other. He always commented on how wonderful, happy, and close these last years were. Their marriage was later solemnized eternally in the LDS Boise Temple on August 16, 2008. Douglas was an active member of the Christ of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he held positions of Sunday School teacher, young Men's President, basketball coach, counselor in two Bishoprics and Bishop. He believe in three basic things of life --- Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ and our reason for coming here to earth; the concept of eternal family and friends; and always doing your best in business for your clients and your employer. He would like to thank all of those people who he came in contact with over his lifetime for the friendship and kindness they showed to him. Douglas was a fierce and loyal friend. He never met a stranger. He was kind, generous, and had a great sense of humor that could light up a room. He loved people, and his friends were a great joy to him throughout his life. He always said he was "lucky" to have so many wonderful friends, but it wasn't luck; because Douglas was a wonderful friend, he had wonderful friends. He extended his acceptance and friendship to all, and in turn, he treasured their love and affection all the days of his life. Douglas is survived by his wife, Claudia; his son, Michael D. Haight (Rebecca) with grandchildren, Jackson, Reagan, Riley, and Morgan, of Belmont, Mass; his daughter, Lisa Stott (Shiloh) with grandchildren, Lenorah and Atticus, of Walla Walla, WA; his son, Matthew D. Haight (Alisha) with grandchildren, Ethan and Nicholas, of Falls Church, VA; and his brother, David C. Haight (Brenda) of Meridian, ID. In his extended family, Douglas is survived by his step-children: Brian Butler of Boise, ID; Darren Butler (Tera) with grandchildren, Brynn, Clara, and Spencer of Boise, ID; Shelley Butler of Boise, ID; and Janelle Simmons (Jed) with grandchildren, Kaley and Anna, of Mendon, UT. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 14, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS chapel located at 3229 Bogus Basin Road in Boise. A viewing will be held on Sunday, March 13th from 3-5 p.m. at the Relyea Funeral Chapel at 318 N. Latah in Boise as well as from 10:00 until 10:45 prior to the services on Monday. I knew Doug at Idaho State College as a fellow SigEp> He also showed me where his grandfather? worked in Pocatello. We also spent a bit of time together in College Park, Md. and Washinton DC in the summer of 1966. I like him a lot and knew Sharon Beaver albeit casually. Doug was a fine man.

I can't believe believe 8yrs have passed since we lost Mr Haight. There are so many memories of Doug just being Doug. As I was thinking about Doug, I recall a memory that seems pretty funny now that I am an adult. I was about 17 or 18 and I was ready to move forward on saving for my future. I recall scheduling a meeting with Doug (here is was a VP of the brokerage house) to discuss what type of investments a guy my age should be engaging in. Well, after taking a good half hour explaining all my options I chose to move forward and deposit my $272! Wow, not sure Doug earned much commission that day :) Although it did exemplify what type of person and friend Doug was to all. God Bless you Doug Haight!

Doug was a truly remarkable person, forever friendly and open; a delight to be around. More than fifty years of knowing him was far too short...
The world is a lesser place without him.

We will miss you Doug. I have many things to thank you for; my first TAB soda, many countless hours of hoop, not laughing when I came to see with my first $100.00 and seeking advice, many laughs and conversations about life and sports, and always making me feel welcome in your home. God bless you my friend.

I knew Doug as a friend in junior high and high school and as my stockbroker in the 70s and 80s. He was trustworthy and of high moral character. I will miss him and I know he will be greatly missed by his family, to whom I offer sincere condolences.

Doug will be missed...his character and style with people set an example many of us can learn from. My personal thoughts frequently went back to the good times we shared during our high school, college and post college era.
My message to his children and grand children…Doug was a good person…someone you can be proud of and aspire to live your life in the same spirit and passion he conducted himself. He will be missed by a large group of friends that go back to his early years in life.
