Freida Rice Obituary

Freida F. Rice, 79, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, died on September 2, 2010, at her home in Boise. She was born to Delbert and Evelyn Flack on October 18, 1930, in Springfield, Ohio, where she grew up as the second child in a family of four daughters. After graduating from high school, she met and married her future husband, Carl Georgeff, a career officer in the Army Corps of Engineers. The family lived in Europe and the Middle East where, while living in Iran, Freida taught English to the Iranians. She maintained close friendships with many of her acquaintances from her years as a military wife, particularly her friend, Dorle Frank of Frankfort, Germany. Freida was very proud of being an officer's wife, and she and Carl had many memorable and happy times together, traveling and entertaining their many friends. Together they had five children, Douglas, John, Tom, Therese and Tammy. They moved to Boise in 1970 after Carl's retirement from military service, but were later divorced. Freida then married Dayle Rice, and they spent many happy years together until Dayle's death. Dayle shared Freida's love of travel, and they took many trips in their motor home, spending time in Mexico and months at the Oregon Coast, where Freida particularly enjoyed deep sea fishing. They also spent many weekends camping and fishing in the beautiful mountains of Idaho. Freida returned to college in the 1970's and earned her R.N. in 1977; she spent several years working in the health care industry before retiring to spend more time traveling with Dayle - she absolutely loved being outdoors. Freida was vivacious and outgoing, loved to entertain, do crossword and jigsaw puzzles, word games and jumbles and play cards - she and her dear friend Elaine Rockne spent many hours engaged in ruthless battles of Scrabble - both were fiercely competitive! She was a great cook, and for years she and good friend Kathy Longstroth spent many hours baking their traditional batches of Christmas cookies and candy. Her family will always remember her devotion to her children, her generous heart and her wonderful sense of humor. Surviving her are her children, John Georgeff of Laramie, Wyoming; Tom Georgeff of Boise; Therese Georgeff of McCall; Tammy Scarborough of Boise; grandchildren Michelle West (Marcus) and Jacob Reynolds, of Boise; sister Barbara McConehea of Springfield, Ohio; as well as nieces and nephews and their children. In addition, she is survived by many dear friends, among them Dorle and Gerhard Frank, Elaine Rockne and the Longstroth family. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Norma and Joyce; her ex-husband, Carl Georgeff; and her husband, Dayle Rice. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on September 14, 2010, at Sacred Heart Church in Boise. Memorials are suggested to a charity of your choice. All of us want to thank our brother, Tom, who was Mom's absolute mainstay and rock for the past 25 years - his constant help and support was invaluable to her for all of her life, but especially when her health began to fail. At her request, she will be cremated and her ashes scattered in the mountains of Idaho, where she loved to spend her time.
