Glenn Barker Obituary

Glenn Barker
August 16, 1923 - September 16, 2021
Boise, Idaho - Glenn Reynolds Barker lived a steadfast life as a good and faithful servant. Born in Gooding, Idaho on August 16, 1923 to Glenn and Frances Morris Barker, he peacefully passed into the arms of his loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 16, 2021 in Boise, Idaho, at the age of 98.
Glenn graduated from Gooding High School in 1941 before having his studies at University of Idaho interrupted by World War II. He served in the 14th and 20th Armored Divisions of the U.S. Army in France and Germany, returning to U of I to complete his Electrical Engineering degree in 1949. During his post-war studies, he also met the love of his life, Phyllis LaRue, with whom he enjoyed 63 years of marriage until her passing in August 2013.
Glenn spent most of his career with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, including nearly 20 years at Grand Coulee Dam in eastern Washington. True to form, his mind for innovation led him to develop the first colored-light display on the dam's huge spillway, which evolved over the years into a laser light show. His career advancement moved the family to Boise in 1969. After retirement from the USBR in 1979, Glenn enjoyed a second career at Idaho Power Company.
Glenn had a true servant's heart, which was reflected in his choice of community activities during his 50+ years in Boise. He served faithfully with Boise Kiwanis, Habitat for Humanity, and the Helps ministry at Discovery Church Boise, among others. His faith was expressed and strengthened as an active member of Discovery Church and Epworth Chapel on the Green. Glenn was known for his great patience and optimistic attitude. He always had a kind word for everyone he met, and would actively look for any opportunity to lend a hand.
Glenn and Phyllis loved traveling the world to visit old friends, make new ones, and embrace different cultures. Travel often provided great fellowship opportunities, as Glenn and Phyllis vacationed on the Oregon Coast for fifteen consecutive years with the same four couples, building deep and lasting friendships. After Phyllis' passing, Glenn continued to enjoy travels with family members and close friends, and was always interested in the NEXT adventure. Just three weeks before his death, Glenn enjoyed a vacation with his three children and their spouses on the Oregon Coast.
Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, three brothers and three sisters, and one daughter, Janice. He is survived and loved by his children, Rebecca (Dan) Casey, Nancy (David) Shaw, and Joel (Donna) Barker, all residing in the Boise area; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Due to current COVID trends in our community and in consideration for local healthcare workers, the family is deferring any public celebration of Glenn's life to a later date. To receive updates on the details of a future celebration, please enter your contact information at www.glennbarkermemorial.com. The family recommends Mission Aviation Fellowship or either of the churches mentioned above for memorials in Glenn's honor.

We are thinking about Glenn on the anniversary of his passing. Sitting in my Habitat house today, we are so appreciative of Glenn and all the work he did on our house. He and Phyllis made a big difference in peoples' lives. They were generous and giving people. May God continue to be with them always.

I grew up living next door to the Barkers. What a wonderful family, and I have such good memories of those happy years. Glen taught me how to ride a bike,( one that he and Bob had constructed from "stuff" in their back yard,) and Jim sang at my wedding.Such happy memories of a happy family, and your family is so fortunate to have such a wonderful man for father, grandfather, and kind man. His life is a good example for all of us.

So sorry about the loss of Joel´s father. I visited with my friend, Donna, today and she told me about her beloved father-in-law´s passing. It seems as though he had an amazing life and that he will be sorely missed by all his family members and friends. I will be praying for peace and beautiful memories for all the family!

To Glenn's Family:

Glenn was a special person to our family. We met Glen in 1995 when our Habitat For Humanity house was being built. Glenn was the construction manager on this project. He showed up faithfully every Saturday at 8:00 AM for ten months when our house was being built. He was a person who lived his faith everyday. He and Phyllis were the Lord's servants. We will miss Glenn's positive and caring attitude; he was always thinking of others. We enjoyed visiting with Glenn in his later years. RIP
