Hai Gilbert Obituary

Hai Gilbert
April 4, 1949 - January 7, 2022
Green Valley, Arizona - Hai T. Gilbert passed away January 7, 2022 from complications following heart surgery. She was 72. Hai was born on April 4, 1949 in Saigon, South Vietnam to Nguyen v Tu and Tung. Just before the fall of Saigon to the Viet Cong in April, 1975, she and her family were evacuated to the U.S. in an Air Force transport aircraft.
Hai worked in the Los Angeles area for several years as a bookkeeper. She married James (Steve) Gilbert in July 1978 and the couple moved to Boise, ID. They moved back to Los Angeles in 1980 and she continued her work in accounting. The couple moved to Salt Lake City in 1993 and Hai started her career as a credit analyst with American Express. While intensely studying painting, working in both oil and acrylics, Hai became quite accomplished in art and began selling her work. She retired in 2009 and Hai and Steve moved to Green Valley, AZ in 2011.
In Green Valley, Hai loved the GVR facilities and was an active swimmer and fitness buff. She loved to play Mahjong and was a member of the Amigas Club.
She is survived by her husband James Steve Gilbert, daughter Mimi T Herteux of Salt Lake City, son, Capt. Stephen M Gilbert (Kelly) of O'Fallon, IL, and grandsons Ethan and Jackson. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Ngoc, her parents in law James S and Bernice A Gilbert and grandparents in law Alfred S and Louise S Gilbert, all of Boise, ID.
A viewing will be from 5-7PM on Thursday, January 20 and a graveside service will be held at noon on Friday, January 21, at Cloverdale Memorial Park

I first met Hai in 1978 at the LA Airport. I was there to visit Steve who had been my Peace Corps buddy in Thailand. When he met me at the plane he was with this beautiful Vietnamese woman. I remember how proud Steve looked as he introduced her to me , in FRENCH mind you, as his fiancee. (They had just gotten engaged the night before.)The next day I was with them when Steve "officially" asked Hai's mother for her hand in marriage. I remembering him saying, "I love your daughter very much." And he did, for forty three years. My wife, Teming and our kids, met Steve and Hai and their kids, Mimi and Steve when we visited Utah years later. We didn't get to see the Gilberts often, but we kept in touch. We will miss Hai and we send our prayers and condolences to Steve, Mimi, and young Steve, and all the rest of Hai's family.

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom, grandma, wife and dear loved one. I remember when she lived here in the 70's. I was just a little girl at the time. My heart goes out to you and your loss. May you be comforted in special ways during this journey of grief. Love, Melissa

As old neighbors and friends, we are saddened to learn about Hai. For many years we lived across the street in SLC and our boys ventured through school together. Hai was always on the go and full of life. We wish Steve, Mimi and Stephen comfort going forward. She is definitely gone too soon.

I am so sorry to hear Hai passed. We worked together at American Express. I loved our conversations. She was a Great Lady.

I'm so sorry to learn of Hai's passing. We became friends while working at American Express and I truly enjoyed knowing her. She painted a picture of sunflowers for me and I've always cherished it. Rest in peace, Hai.
