Jeffrey McVey Obituary

Jeffrey "Jeff" Stuart McVey

August 29, 1949 - January 15, 2024

Meridian , Idaho - Jeffrey "Jeff" Stuart McVey, 74, passed away on January 15th, 2024, in Meridian, ID with his family and friends by his side. Jeff was born on August 29, 1949, in Dayton, OH and was the only child of Stanley and Loretta McVey. He is survived by son, Darrell M. McVey of Boise, ID, and his twin daughters Sarah E. McVey of Los Angeles, CA, and Rachel A. McVey of Denver, CO.

Jeff embarked on his journey from Ohio to the U.S. Navy, where he honed his skills as an avionics technician over four years of dedicated service. Stationed in Vietnam at the Cam Ranh Bay airbase, he adeptly repaired anti-submarine warfare equipment on the formidable P-3A and P-3C Orion aircraft. Transitioning to civilian life in 1973, Jeff brought his expertise to Moffett Field, CA, supervising the maintenance of P-3C flight simulators until 1989.

Continuing his career path, Jeff ventured to Montana, working as an industrial radiographer for Montana X-Ray in Billings. In 1992, he embraced a new role as an aircraft avionics inspector and technical writer with the US Department of Interior's Office of Aviation Services (OAS) in Boise, ID. Notably, Jeff spearheaded the formation of a union, leading Local 2052 of the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) at OAS, marking a significant milestone in his professional journey. He devoted his efforts to OAS until his well-deserved retirement in 2022, commemorated by a prestigious 50-year federal service pin.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Jeff explored a diverse range of hobbies. From culinary adventures and a deep love for music to his skilled craftsmanship in woodworking, he found joy in many pursuits. Notably, Jeff held the world's largest collection of tire ashtrays, showcasing his unique and eclectic tastes. In recent times, he cherished moments attending concerts with his daughters. However, it was his unwavering passion for automobiles that truly shaped his life. Jeff immersed himself in car culture, regularly attending shows and museums. He proudly boasted a collection of classic cars and actively engaged in races, including participating in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) autocross events alongside his son, Darrell. His need for speed led him to the renowned Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, where he not only competed but also volunteered as a car safety Technical Inspector. In a standout moment in 2019, Jeff achieved an impressive milestone, setting a National Record in the "D" Diesel Streamliner class at Bonneville, achieving speeds exceeding 253MPH. This feat earned him a place in the esteemed Bonneville 200MPH Club. Jeff's expertise extended beyond borders, as he earned an International License from the FIA, fulfilling the role of LSR Scrutineer at the 2023 Bolivia Speed Trials held at the Salar de Uyuni.

Jeff's legacy is woven with threads of dedication, innovation, and a zest for life that touched all who knew him. He leaves behind a lasting impact on the aviation and automotive communities, forever remembered for his unwavering commitment and indomitable spirit.

A celebration of life will be held for Jeff at The Bowman Funeral Parlor in Garden City, ID at 10254 W Carlton Bay Dr, Boise, ID 83714 on Saturday March 30, 2024, at 11am. Per Jeff's wishes, the family will be spreading his ashes at the Bonneville Salt Flats during World of Speed September 6-9th 2024 and invite all who can attend either event.

While I never met Jeff, upon attending his estate sale, I am jealous of his life well lived. I only hope to achieve half his accomplishments, and wish I could have known him in person. I acquired one of his ashtrays, and will think of him when I interact with it, possibly even sharing his story if possible. Well done, sir.

As I reflect on the many great times Jeff and I had together back in high school in Kettering, it focuses on the rapid journey of life, and how quickly time passes. I think of Jeff often. He was one of the most interesting and eclectic people I have ever know, as he attacked life with a zest rarely seen.

I am sorry to hear of Jeff's passing. He was a long distance friend of my Dad's, who passed away in Nov. 2022. My Dad was also a huge tire ashtray collector. I tried looking up Jeff for some advice on what to do with the thousand or so ashtrays I now own. I would've loved to talk to him. Many condolences to Jeff's friends and family, and may he rest with the Lord Jesus Christ, for eternity.

Ii met Jeff thru his work at The Office Aircraft Services. He was the radio inspector that inspected our Helicopters prior to being awarded a contract with the BLM. We found Jeff to be very pleasant to work. As years went by we created a friendship; sharing a common interest in cars and racing. Jeff and I bet each other on NASCAR races for 18years , went to The World of Outlaw races together and spent three days together o a trip to The Bonneville Salt Flats in 2018. Jeff was smart funny and had control of his life till the time he died. I will always remember his story of becoming a member of the 200 miles per hour club and the bowling shirts he was so proud of. I will miss Jeff.

Jeff was the best man in my wedding, 1972 in Kettering, Ohio. We had known each other since high school, and developed a lasting friendship over the decades. May he RIP.
