Keith Stein Obituary

Keith Stein, 86, passed quietly away on November 7, 2015, at home, surrounded by his devoted and loving family. A memorial mass will be held Monday, November 16, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John's Cathedral.

Keith was born to Albert and Anona Stein in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Keith and his family moved several times during his boyhood, eventually settleing in Oregon City, Oregon. Surrounded by the very large Stein family, Keith flourished, learned the satisfaction of a hard day's work, and how to treat people equally and with respect.

Keith was educated in Oregon City, graduated from Oregon City High School and immediately enlisted in the US Marine Corp. As a proud Marine, Keith served aboard many fine ships and aircraft carriers. His favorite the USS Boxer, is still in service in San Diego.

Keith returned to Oregon City after his honorable service where he started his career as a beer peddler on the Oregon coast. He married Joyce A. Stein and together they drove to Boise, Idaho to start a beer distributorship with his first brand, Heidelberg beer. During these years their children Brad, Craig and Teri were born. Keith then went on to acquire Miller High Life and Anheuser - Busch products. In 1971, Keith was instrumental in passing the legislation making wine available for public sale through grocery stores.

In 1979, Keith married Catherine Webster. Together they enjoyed 36 years of a loving relationship with many adventures and travels with family and friends. Their daughter Cortney was born, making them three musketeers.

Through the years Keith learned to play several lifetime sports with varying degrees of success. He learned and taught others appropriate language tailored for the individual sports. Golf clubs were shared with water features, tennis racquets helped to bend, ski equipment shredded, accomplished with a smile on his face and a Budweiser in his hand.

Keith was well known for his love of Idaho. His quiet philanthropic gifts are still being discovered throughout our community today. His love of music led him to one of his most fulfilling gifts, and that being the patron and sponsor of the Boise State University Keith Stein Blue Thunder Marching Band, "The Pride of Idaho."

Keith is survived by his wife, Catherine; sons, Brad (Jan), Craig (Linn Dee); daughters, Teri (Ed) Miller, Cortney (Brian) Ditto; grandchildren, Anona and Garrett Ditto, Quinne (Chris) Russell, Austen Miller, and Bart Miller; great-grandchild, Oliver Russell; siblings, Stanley (Willie) Stein, Albert (Gail) Stein, and Sharon (Bob) Hill; and many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Anona Stein.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Keith Stein Blue Thunder Marching Band Student Scholarship Fund, 1910 University Drive, Boise, ID 83725 extension 1561 c/o Blue Marching Band Office.

I worked for Keith in the early 70's. I worked there at Stein Distributing for five years when wine was introduced into grocery stores. I worked with Karen Hylton, Barb, Gary, Margaret, and Cathy before she and Keith married. Keith was always so generous, we stayed in his cabin in McCall and he loaned my husband and me his camper van which we went camping in the Seattle area. I had many fond memories and always had god thoughts of Keith. I am sorry to hear of his passing, even though it is almost a year since then.

Kathy and Family
I had the honor to work for Mr. Stein and yes I still can't call him Keith. He taught me so much about life, people, business and respect. His mere presence commanded respect. You will be missed.

I was so sad to hear this news. Keith was a great man who mentored me at a very young age. I was the Miller girl on campus at BSU for 1980-1985. Keith was such a kind, respectful and generous man. Heaven gained a beautiful angel. My condolences to the Stein family.

Keith was one of my most favorite patients, he was the light of my day whenever he had an appointment. I always enjoyed seeing him out in social settings and especially at The Stagecoach. I will miss you dearly, Keith.

I was a member of the Keith Stein Blue Thunder Marching Band from 1992 to 1996. It was through scholarships funded by Mr. Stein that I was able to complete my Bachelor's degree at Boise State University. I am sorry to learn that Mr. Stein passed, but he has ensured his legacy through all the young people in the area that he has helped to earn college degrees. The Stein Family is in my thoughts.
