Meredith Groves Obituary
1925 - 2015
Retired United Methodist Pastor Meredith R. Groves passed away on August 24, 2015. He was the Associate Pastor of Cathedral of the Rockies United Methodist Church in downtown Boise from 1952-1969. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 14th at 1:00 at the Salem First United Methodist Church, Salem, Oregon.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years: Dorothy Groves; four children: Jay Groves, David Groves, Linda Crenshaw, and Alan Groves; five grandchildren and also two brothers: Vernon and Eugene Groves.
He was born on September 24, 1925 in Salem, OR to Meredith A. and Esther Groves, the eldest of three sons. He graduated from Seaside High School in Seaside, OR, and was a World War II U.S. Army combat veteran, serving in the 86th Blackhawk Division, 341st Infantry. In the midst of war, he heard and responded to the call of God into the ministry, and got on the path to becoming a United Methodist pastor, like his father. With degrees from Willamette University, Salem, OR, and Perkins School of Theology at SMU in Dallas, TX, he went on to serve as an associate pastor of the Cathedral of the Rockies. In 1969, he went on to serve other United Methodist churches in Oregon, before retiring in Salem, OR in 1991.
He was a man with a commitment and enthusiasm to serve God by serving people. He embodied this before his family and his church. He will also be remembered as a devoted husband, as well as a kind and generous father, who lovingly put his family first. Dorothy and Family, I am sadden to learn of Meredith's passing. I have not seen him in the years we moved from OR. However, he was thought of often. He brought me to the UM Church; he and Dorothy changed my life. As I served in mission these past 3 years in Peru, I have told many people how their outreach and kindness taught me the Wesleyan way. He is with our Lord, May the family's faith bring them comfort. He will be missed.

Please accept my condolences on your loss. Mr. Groves seemed to have been a man that loved family and the simple things in life. I hope you will find a measure of comfort from the words found at 2 Thessalonians 3:16.

Uncle Meredith, I do not know if you knew how much you were cherished by me. Only because I failed to tell you. I failed to tell you how I loved your smile. I failed to tell you how I loved your kindness to all you knew. I failed to tell you how I loved your wisdom. I failed to tell you how I loved your tenderness to Aunt Dot. What I didn't fail to do the last time we spoke, was say I love you. I just wish I had said it more often. Thank you for being my Uncle Meredith.
