Richard Francis Fern Oct. 10, 1921 Feb. 9, 2012 The funeral of Richard Francis Fern (Dick Fern) was held on February 11, 2012 for immediate family only. Interment was on February 13, 2012 in the Veteran's Cemetery in Boise, Idaho. Born in Waipahu, Oahu, Hawaii, Dick was a long time resident of Oakland and a legendary figure of mid-century San Francisco. He was manager of The Ambassador Health Club on Post Street, before he became a partner in The Oakland Athletic Club in which capacities he was loved by many for his exceptional character, ebullient personality, his devotion to physical training, his healing qualities and his great kindness to clients and friends. Dick continued his commitment to physical training, working out almost every day, and helping others, until a few weeks before he died. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eva Jean Fern, his daughter, Yvonne Harrison Solow (husband, Herbert Solow), his son, Richard John Fern (wife, Gloria Fern), grandsons Peter, Christopher and Richard and six great-grandchildren.
