Stephen Gledhill Obituary

Stephen Gledhill
December 10, 1952 - April 3, 2021
Boise, Idaho - Steven J Gledhill, local retired lawyer, passed away on April 3rd, 2021 in Boise, ID. A native Idahoan, Steve was born in Pocatello and moved to Bhul, Idaho when he was three years old. His father's transfer to the Caldwell School District, meant the family moved to Caldwell where Steve attended and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1971.
While at Caldwell High School, Steve lettered in all sports and graduated in the top ten of his class.
Steve declined an invitation to attend rookie camp for either the San Francisco Giants or the New York Yankees after graduating high school and chose rather to attend the College of Idaho. While at the College of Idaho, Steve majored in History, American Studies, and English and graduated from the College of Idaho in 1975 as the first in his class. Steve received numerous academic awards and scholarships while at the College of Idaho and was a Rhodes Scholar nominee.
After graduating from the College of Idaho, Steve accepted a fully funded fellowship to attend Duke University on an American Intellectual History Fellowship, but returned to Idaho prior to the completion of the program.
Subsequent to his return to Idaho, Steve attended the University of Idaho Law School and graduated in 1979. Steve practiced law in Idaho from 1979 until his retirement in 2013, with a brief respite when he lived in both Hong Kong and Singapore for a period of years. Steve was a lifelong Vandal booster and even tried to schedule his home leave while living abroad so he could play in the local Vandal Scramble golf tournament.
Steve was proud of the fact that he had the highest peer review rating available to a lawyer and was a member of the Litigation Council of America, which is a trial lawyer honorary society.
Steve had the good fortune to practice law with two Idaho legends, Lou Coshu and Howard Humphrey. Steve's association with the Cosho Humphrey firm also led him to practice with Rory Jones. Rory and Steve's practice dated back to 1983 and they remained excellent friends until the time of Steve's death.
Steve loved Idaho and was proud of the fact he was an Idaho native. He enjoyed what Idaho had to offer and spent many a day in the field with his brother and friends chasing pheasants and hunting waterfowl. He also enjoyed the many occasions he had to float tube with his brother Tom on the numerous high mountain lakes in Idaho.
Steve had occasion to travel all over the world and had fond memories of balloon rides over the Serengeti plains of Africa, riding elephants on a photo safari for Bengal Tigers in Nepal, rafting rivers in Malaysia, spending a week in a villa on the Island of Ischia in the Mediterranean, as well as travelling across Italy, France, and Switzerland with friends. While living in Asia, Steve got the opportunity to visit mainland China as well as numerous trips to Malaysia and Bali. Interspersed with those trips were visits to Central America.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents Rip and Peggy Gledhill, his sister Shawna of Portland, OR and his half- brother Paul of Scottsdale AZ, and Mary Ella of Boise/Scottsdale. Steve is survived by this brother Gary of Snohomish, Washington and Tom of Caldwell, Idaho.
The family plans to hold an open-house wake to celebrate Steve's life at 3PM on Friday April 23rd at his residence; 3402 W. Hillcrest Dr. Boise, Id 83705. The invitation is open to his friends and family.
A note from the author:
Steve's life had an impact on all of his friends and family. His charm and whit never tapered over the years and he continued to make quick friends wherever he went. His life was more than a few paragraphs, but a wealth of amazing experiences shared with his many great friends. The countless pictures I have ran across always show a smiling and happy Steve surrounded by those he loved. Those are the memories to hold on to. Cheers to Steve!

My condolences to the Gledhill family. As his baseball catcher in Caldwell, Steve was a focused competitor. He had a strong desire to win and do his best. He certainly did not need any motivation as he was a very motivated person with a quick wit.

In our early years, he and I were assigned to picking up garbage cans in the cut parks. Steve rode the left side board and I the right one grabbing the cans as we drove through the park... life was good in Caldwell. I have good memories of this guy. I am sorry to hear his fourth quarter of life was short....
