Terry Hummel
June 1, 1943 - December 7, 2021
Boise, Idaho - Terry Albert Hummel, 78, of Kuna, ID passed away peacefully on December 7th, surrounded by his family. Terry grew up in both Regina, Saskatchewan, and Bakersfield, CA. After high school, Terry joined the US Navy where he was stationed in Pearl Harbor, HI, and Okinawa, Japan. In 1967 Terry married the love of his life, Jill Adams of Bakersfield. They were happily married for 54 years. In 1968 the couple moved to Moscow, ID so that Terry could complete his degree at the University of Idaho. After obtaining his B.A. in History, Terry was accepted to the U of I law school. On the same day of acceptance, he learned he was going to be a daddy and decided to put law school on hold in favor of finding a job to support his family. Susan was born in 1970 and their second child Aaron was born in 1972. In the summer of 1974, Terry was hired by the Federal Probation and Parole where he would work until his retirement as Idaho's Chief Federal Probation Officer in 1995.
Following retirement, Terry sold the family home and purchased a 33-foot Hans Christian sailboat (Syringa) on which the couple spent the next five years sailing. After a shakedown cruise to Alaska, they sailed south and eventually through the Panama Canal. They sold Syringa in Daytona Beach, FL in favor of purchasing a home in Bellingham, WA where they continued boating in the Puget Sound on their trawler (White Fox) until they moved back to Boise in 2016 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Terry will be dearly missed and always remembered. Terry was predeceased by his grandad John Alexander of Regina, Saskatchewan, and brother Allen Hummel of Yucaipa, CA. He is survived by his wife Jill, brother Andy Hummel, sister Margaret Frieson, daughter Susan (Nate) Calvin, son Aaron (Amy) Hummel, grandsons Austin (Kaitlin) and Jaxon Hummel, granddaughters Hannah and Kennedy Calvin, granddaughter Chloe Hummel, and great-granddaughter Brinley Hummel. A celebration of Terry's life will be held on June 4, 2022, in Eagle, ID.

Jill & Family,
We are tardy sending you our condolences. but you have been much on our minds. We have been unable to get your current address to get in touch the old-fashioned way, so this will have to do. We were so shocked and saddened to learn of Terry's passing. We seem to have lost touch in recent years, which we regret, especially because we so enjoyed your and his company in the good old days. We fondly remember your accounts of your sailing adventures and how Terry could always make us laugh--something in short supply these days. Please know we send our sincere condolences to you and your family and hope that knowing how much others care will give you some comfort.

Jill and family,

On behalf of the Bellingham Sail and Power Squadron, we want to send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to you at this time. We were so sad to hear of Terry's passing. I am still the editor of the Bell Signals newsletter and I have added a rememberance that will come out in our February issue. Terry was the first person to speak to me when I attended my first squadron dinner meeting. I also remember fondly his mentoring me and co-teaching the Seamanship class several times.
