Thomas Spasoff Obituary

It's with great sadness that the family of Thomas Carl Spasoff, 89, announces his passing on October 3, 2025.

Tom was born on July 30, 1936 in Chicago. He was the third of thirteen children born at home to Thomas and Pearl (Novak) Spasoff. He is preceded in passing by his parents; sisters Patricia, Barbara, Carol, Marilyn, and Debbie and brothers James, William, and John.

Keeping his memory alive is the love of his life Sandra Joye (Womack) Spasoff, his wife of 59 years, son Andrew (Amy) of North Bethesda, MD, daughter Amy of New York City; grandchildren Samantha and Jacob; sisters Nancy, Kathy, Geri, Audrey; and many nieces and nephews including Susan and Chrissy and of course, many friends.

A lifelong competitive swimmer, Tom lettered at the University of Illinois as a member of the men's swim team while earning his bachelor's and master's degrees. While earning his Doctorate at Indiana University, he was the women's swim coach while being mentored by the men's coach, famed Olympics coach Doc Councilman. He continued his coaching career at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada.

After 2 years in Canada, Tom accepted a teaching position at the University of Cincinnati. After several years in academia, Tom saw an opportunity to educate others on a broader platform. He created his own consulting business in life styles and safety. He was committed to encouraging people to take responsibility for their own wellbeing.

Tom loved traveling the world with Sandra. They cruised and toured many countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America. But above all, his favorite destination was Northern Michigan, drawn their by his early years at YMCA Camp Pinewood, near Muskegon, MI. After attending as a camper for several years, he became a junior counselor, rose through the ranks, and eventually became the camp director.

Tom embraced challenges. As a teenager he dreamt of riding his bike across the country. He thought this might never happen when in 1982 he had heart surgery that involved 6 bypasses. But he was not to be deterred. In 1987, Tom and his son Andy, then 15 years old, rode their bikes from Puget Sound, WA to Atlantic City, NJ. Tom repeated this feat two more times as a solo biker, each time earning money for charitable organizations.

Tom was a very unique person. As a young child he contributed to the family income by shining shoes and doing odd jobs for neighbors. This generated in him a fierce independence and perseverance that carried him through many of life's challenges. He will be remembered for his kindness and encouragement to others to fulfill their dreams.

Tom's wonderful life will be celebrated on Friday, October 24, 2025, at Crane Creek County Club from 3-5 p.m. Although Tom supported many charities, the family requests charitable donations be made to an organization closest to your heart.
