Warren Trunnell Obituary

Warren Wood Trunnell Saturday, April 5, we lost our beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend. This is a huge loss to our family. He was the oldest of 15 children, the father or four children, the uncle to 35 nieces and nephews, the grandfather to eight children, the cousin to countless, and a dear friend to many of you who are reading this obituary. Warren Wood was the first of 15 children, born to Gerald and Doris Trunnell. As first born, he blazed the trail for the rest of his siblings, giving law enforcement and school officials a run for their money. He will be particularly remembered for speeding his red MG home in the wee hours, screeching into the driveway, gravel flying, taking the wheels off his car, and jumping into bed, leaving Mother to answer police questions. Some school officials, like Mr. Cannon, got more attention than others from Woody and brother Blaine; they celebrated Easter by egging and then spraying "Happy Easter" on his Wilder home. After various confrontations with the law, Woody ended up in the Marines. At one point, he was an MP and received the enviable distinction of escorting a contestant for the Miss Chula Vista contest, Miss Maria Leonard, who later, with members of her family, became part of our extended family. Woody did two tours of duty in Vietnam as a land Marine. We honor his service to our country. Upon returning from Vietnam, he attended the Univ. of Oregon, Eugene, and met his first wife, Barbara Jean Wright. The two married and headed to law school in Lawrence, Kan. Their first son, Wesley Vance, was born March 2; two months later, Woody graduated from law school. Barbara Jean died of Lupus in July. Woody and Wesley returned to the family farm. He began to rebuild his life, opening up a law practice and buying property a quarter of a mile from Mother and Dad. Several years later, Woody married Connie Lee Townsend and had another son, Bradley Wayne, and twin girls, Tyffanie and Tabitha. The farm was and continues to be a foundation for both Woody's family and the extended family as a whole. One of Woody's greatest joys was the Indy 500 because it meant visiting his life-long friend and Vietnam veteran buddy, Stephen Bradley, for whom his second son was named. Every year, Woody took one of his daughters and grandchildren with him to Indianapolis where he spent time tailgating, reminiscing, and watching the race with his kids and best friend. Woody, as we know him, aka Woodrow, General Woodrow, has been a vibrant and colorful part of Canyon County history for 62 years. As a public defender and private attorney, he cut a striking figure, often appearing in court still clad in mud-covered irrigation boots. Woody loved the law and politics. Before he left for the USMC Camp Pendleton, he was seen every where in his trademark hat, "Vote for Goldwater." He loved the wit and humor of William F. Buckley and George Wills. He never missed the morning paper. In fact, much to the chagrin of many prosecuting attorneys, he would bury his nose in the morning paper during their opening remarks. As a fisherman, he could be found at his favorite fishing holes, Phillips Reservoir, Horse Thief, Deadwood Reservoir, and Warm Lake, trolling for fish, enjoying the scenery, disentangling lines for nephews, siblings, grandchildren, and friends. Phillips Lake was his favorite spot until he was ticketed for missing a life jacket; he never returned to Phillips again. Some of the greatest family memories will be forever connected to these lakes, surrounding campsites and General Woodrow frying fish, listening to Willy and Waylon, the Righteous Brothers, the Mamas and the Papas, the Beach Boys, and playing gin rummy until the early morning hours. A letter from one of our cousins, Steve Gregory, to Woody's children reflects our own love and admiration for a great man. "Wesley, Bradley, Tiffany, Tabitha..Heroes...there aren't too many left in this world that one can look up to in admiration. Athletes, politicians, Hollywood stars, for the most part, have become too influenced by the "all-mighty dollar" and no longer are good role models for our kids! So, we have too look within, within our own families! I just wanted the four of you to know...your father has always been one of my heroes! Here is a man who grew up on a farm, served his country, became an attorney, has experienced more in life than any one individual should have to or want to experience! And yet, he continued to "live life"! Oh, I am sure he had his down moments like all of us, but every time I saw "Wood," he was all smiles and always had a laugh! I have often thought, "Gee, I wish I was that strong!" This country of ours needs more heroes like Wood! I hope he is one of your heroes! He's definitely one of mine, always has been, always will! Lots of Love, Steve Gregory." Our blessings go with him as we remember him, his wit, his chuckle, and his enormous heart. A celebration of his life will be held at the Methodist Church in Wilder, Idaho, on Monday at 3 p.m.. His ashes will be spread on Phillips Lake.

Dear family: I just found out about Woody's passing. Though I have not been in contact with the family for some time, I will miss my cousin. I remember the fun we had when my family came down and we help bringing in the cows, help with irrgation pipes, road in the back of that old pickup he used to drive. I loved being on the farm with the family. Please except my condolences.

Woody was a very special friend. We first met forty-four years ago in Marine boot camp. We were drawn to each other like a magnet - maybe because of our farming backgrounds or shared love for sports, but it was a friendship that would last a lifetime. Woody taught me to play gin, and we spent many hours playing the game. He taught me well, but he was always the best.
Woody made trips to Indiana each May of the last two years to go to the 500 mile race. I hadn't been going to the race, but when he came back and wanted to go, it was great. I was so much looking forward to seeing him and going to the race again this year. I will always be thankful for the time we had together these past two years.
I will truely miss the wit and humor he always had. I feel my life was blessed by knowing such a person. Woody, I will miss you!

I have a very strong feeling that he knew how much his family and friends loved him. Our son Scott spoke so fondly of him after knowing him for only a short while. Loss of a loved one hurts so much -- and for a long time. May your happy memories of Woody help you find peace and comfort.

My condolences to all the Trunnell family and my prayers are with you. I remember woody as a kind of wild and crazy guy,he just did things on the spare of the moment and had a good imagination of how things should be, even if it was wrong.
Woody joined the marines a year ahead of me,so when I got back from my 2nd tour, I remembered he picked me up and we went out and had a few beers just like marines do,and remmenist about vietnam a little.
Woody will always be remembered for all the good he did for his country and for all the memories he left us with his presence on this earth.
Semper Fi my friend!!

Woody's passing came as a shock to me. I knew he hadn't been well but it has been a few years since I saw him last. It was always a good time with Woody. When I came out to the farm in '76, after my Navy discharge, he took me fishing and hunting a few times, and hitting the Tap rooms at night. He knew everyone; he was running for some local office that summer. We continued the fishing and 'crazy' hunting on various visits over the years, rolling around in that Cornbinder, guns ablazing! (Don't tell anyone). Fond memories are what binds us together. Cousin Woody was a jovial man, always giving of himself. I was lucky enough to have experienced some of that. He will be sorely missed.

Ken Rosencrantz

April 6, 2008

My family (Rosencrantz's) first worked for Gerald Trunnell in 1952 when we moved from Arkansas. We lived in the house at the bottom of the hill and all five of us boys moved sprinkler pipes for Gerald and my Dad worked as mechanic for Gerald. We all knew Woody and worked with him on the farm and ate at his table with all his family as Gerald fed his work crew. I can still remembe that huge table and the fabulous lunches his mother made up for us. I have not seen nor talked with Woody since leaving Wilder but remember the family quite well. I can remember Woody being as generous then as he is described by others now. My condolences and prayers go out to his family.

For the short time I spent with Woody, I developed a great friendship with him. A lot of the times I spoke to him he wished me well, and wanted to know when I could come up there and go fishing with him. Woody was a great man. I have nothing but fond memories of him, and he never asked for anything from me but my friendship. We will all miss Woody, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

What a beautifully written obituary. Woody sounds like a real character. I never met him, but I wish I had. My deepest condolences.

Hazel Smallwood

April 6, 2008

Deepest and Heartfelt condolences from the Entire Smallwood family to the Trunnells at this time of great loss. Our families have known each other since 1938? Oh my, thats 70 years now. Woody will be missed. He was a fine man, a tradition handed down in his family from his Grand Father Percy and his Father Gerald. Woody was proof that a sense of honor, justice and right can be handed down from one generation to the next.
