Kodjopa Attoh Obituary

Attoh, Kodjopa

Kodjopa Attoh died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on February 7th, 2011 at the age of 66 after a long battle with stomach cancer. He was a well respected and extensively published geologist, a loyal and loving father, husband and friend with a passion for soccer, tennis and politics. Kodjopa was the son of Ephraim Attoh and Ellen Bansah of Taviefe, Ghana, born on March 29th, 1944 in Taviefe where he began his schooling. After his middle school education at Bishop Hermann School in Kpando, Ghana, he completed his secondary education at the prestigious Achimota College. He then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science (Geology), a Masters of Science (Geology) and a Ph.D (Geology) from the University of Ghana, University of Cincinnati and Northwestern University, respectively. He returned to Ghana from the United States in 1974 to teach and conduct research at the University of Ghana as a senior lecturer (Assistant Professor) between 1974 and 1978. Thereafter he moved to Ottawa, Canada after successfully competing for a post-doctoral fellowship at the Geological Survey of Canada. Life in Canada was good. He made many lifelong friends there and learned the joys of ice skating on the frozen Ottawa River. But after two years (1978-80) he left to accept a position at Hope College in Holland, Michigan where he worked, married Sandra Greene and began his family. During his years among the Dutch of western Michigan (1981-1993), he regularly hosted the African foreign students enrolled at Hope College and at the theological seminary in town. His enthusiasm for teaching found great expression in leading students on field trips throughout North America and West Africa. Many a student remembers him clambering over outcrops and through road cuts, pointing out how to read the rocky landscape. In demonstrating his excitement about the world's oldest formations, he inspired many students to continue their study of geology into graduate school. This was true wherever he taught. In 1993 he moved to Cornell University where he worked first as an Associate Professor and later as a Senior Research Associate, expanding his record of publications and expertise in the geology of Ghana through collaborative research with colleagues at both Cornell and Syracuse University.

Kodjopa took great pride in his family's accomplishments and constantly preached to his children the importance of doing their very best, especially in school. He was equally passionate about politics, seeking out others to debate and discuss the latest developments in the U.S. and around the world. He empathized with the disadvantage of the world and because of this was an early volunteer with the Durfee Tutoring Project, working with Ithaca students to improve their performance at school. He was also a regular contributor to such organizations as UNICEF and the NAACP, and to development projects in Ghana. His love of travel and his desire to share his passion for geology led him to work at Mekele University in Ethiopia (1997-1998), the University of Kuwait (1999-2001) and back to the University of Ghana on a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship (2002-2004) where he taught geology.

He is predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Albert Okai and Kwame Attoh. He is survived by his wife, Sandra E. Greene; two sons, Kafui and Kwaku Attoh; eleven brothers and sisters; a multitude of nieces and nephews and a host of friends in the United States and around the world, from Austria to New Zealand, from Ghana and Croatia to Ethiopia.

A memorial service to honor the life of Kodjopa Attoh will be held on March 5, 2011 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 315 N. Cayuga Street, Ithaca, NY 14850. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to any of the following: First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund (Please see address above), Hospicare and Palliative Care of Tompkins County, New York, 172 East King Road Ithaca, NY 14850 or American Cancer Society, P.O. I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Attoh's passing. I was a student at Cornell University and student employee at his research laboratory back in 1993 to 1995. He was a very dedicated Cornell Faculty member and inspired me always with his energy, candor, and ability to make his research of sub-surface Coronas come as just an undergraduate student. I remember his excitement and energy at our two-month Summer Geology Field Camp Class out in the San Pueblo Mountains in Colorado. He cared deeply about his family and I heard often about his sons. Twenty five years ago after graduating in 1995, I pursued becoming a Professional Geologist here in my home state of California and often thought back to how he taught me to tackle scientific problems and analysis in my work. I am so sorry for your loss and my condolences to his family and friends around the world.

Kodjopa and I were house and room mates in Gyamfi House in Achimota School. When we met and introduced ourselves to each other the first time, what impressed me most about him were his bright intellect, kindness and strong determination woven with his indefatigabilty.I was therefore not surprised to hear about the immense contribution he made to mankind especially in the field of Geophysics before he left us to join our Maker.I will always miss him. He was a definitely a great man and a great friend!!!

You taught us the joy of geology and how one could more or 'talk and listen' to an outcrop. Thanks so much for your friendship from Ghana to Canada, USA, and Kuwait. May your soul rest in perpertual peace. Our deepest condolences to Sandra, Kafui, Kwaku and the all the family in Ghana.

What a great opportunity to be an undergraduate student of Prof. Kojopa Attoh in both Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology! In 1987 at the University of Ghana, this lecturer declared celebration of every outcrop and thin section. To him, rocks speak and even shout and require trained ears to get their messages. His public lectures were therefore packed with enthusiasm. Certainly, Prof. Attoh’s publications on Ghanaian Geology will remain a legacy and challenge. Though gone, yet his spirit is alive in every rock both here and beyond - a great service to humanity and to his maker.

Kodjopa Attoh was one very rare species of man - one who would become a (nearly) life-long friend after just one very brief meeting.

Kodjo, in almost forty years, you never disappointed me!

An excellent geologist and a man of great mental strength. We have had geological field trips across Ghana, debated on geology and established the occurrence of carbonatites in the Dahomeyides of southeastern Ghana. We published several papers together and still have some in the pipeline......He shaped me as a competent petrologist and let me see through the mantle; so are many of his students.

Aoo! My only Kodjopa! Without you, life would have been completely unbearable for me. No doubt you usually tell me "I am your last hope". True, you and God was my last hope but now that you are gone, God is my very last hope.

It is my prayer that God will give you a very restful place in his bosom by his uncommon mercies.

Sandra, Kafui and Kwaku, please take heart and put all your hope on God. He would not disappoint you in Jesus' name.

Dr. Attoh taught me geology at Hope College in the early 1980s. He was truly an inspiration and a model scientist. It was his example that led me to my career as a geologist. I think of him often. Thanks for sharing him with us.

February 24, 2011

Kodjo and Sandra kept us (then students) together in Holland, Michigan. They scheduled party-like meetings with food and other refreshments just to bring African and other students together. When Kodjo was not sure any of us got the invitation to come to their home, he would do the foot work to seek us out. I still recall quite vividly his coming to my home on 13th Street to specifically invite me to come to one of the several gatherings. His words "Come over, okay, okay T.Y., see you there" Kodjo made each one of us feel so special. Just a couple of days before his transition, we spoke on the phone and even after so many years, he still remembered and asked "do you still speak those big words when you preach?" We laughed together. I said no more big Dr Attoh, no more big words, just little ones now, and he laughed some more. I will always be thankful to you Kodjo and Sandra for keeping us sane in Holland. I miss you dearly.

Stay strong Sandra, Kafui, Kweku, in-laws, extended family, and friends.

Care always,
T.Y.
