SPARTA, N.C. – The Rev. David Reese Gilliam, 89, of Sparta, N.C., formerly of Elkin, passed away November 5, 2014 at Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence. He was born in Sparta, N.C. to David Reese and Carrie Phipps Gilliam. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah Jane Gilliam; brother, Wesley Gilliam; and sisters, Grace Calloway, Jean Adams Gentry and Patsy Long. He is survived by his wife, June Gilliam of Grayson Nursing Center; granddaughter, Madison Gilliam of Dandridge, Tenn.; niece, Mary Harris and husband Carol of Elkin, N.C. and Mike Long and wife Julie of Conowingo, Md.; and several great nieces and nephews. He retired from the Methodist ministry in 1989 after 30 years service, then continued with small local churches in the Sparta area during the 1990s. A funeral service was conducted November 8 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence. Interment followed in Shiloh Cemetery, Sparta, N.C. The Rev. Randy Morris officiated.
