WESTMINSTER, S.C.
Chief Petty Officer USN (Ret.) William "Bill" Major Burton, 80, husband of Barbara Jean Wood Burton, 110 Grant Road, passed away Friday, February 27, 2015.
Born in Oconee County, he was the son of the late Major and Martha Haynes Burton. Mr. Burton retired from the United States Navy having served during Vietnam and the Korean Conflict and earned six Good Conduct Medals. He later retired from Beacon Manufacturing. Mr. Burton was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of Deacons and was a member of the men's Sunday School Class.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Barbara, include stepson, Leonard "Len" Smith and wife Valerie of Westminster; sons, Joe Burton and wife Rhonda of Westminster, and Major Eugene Burton and wife Nikki of Alabama; daughters, Diane Marie Cooper and husband Kirby of Walhalla, Juanita Annette Williams and husband Steve of Seneca, and Barbara Lynn Burton of Alabama; brother, Larry Burton and wife Margaret; sister, Dorothy Jones; seventeen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, March 2, 2015 from the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oconee Memorial Park with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m., Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Sandifer Funeral Home. The family is at the home of Len Smith, 110 Grant Road, Westminster, SC 29693. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of the Foothills, Attn: Foundation Office, 298 Memorial Drive, Seneca, SC 29672 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 3223 Sunset Blvd, Suite 100, West Columbia, SC 29169.
