Ed McCumber Obituary

Ed McCumber

Anderson - Edgar Thomas "Ed" McCumber of Anderson, SC passed away unexpectedly after a brief battle with lymphoma on Monday, February 1, 2021. He was 70 years old.

Born January 19, 1951 in Savannah, GA, Ed was the son of the late Thomas Lucien McCumber and Gertilene Estelle Holmes McCumber, and stepson of the late Lillian Hill McCumber. After graduating from Hershel V. Jenkins High School in Savannah, GA, Ed attended the University of Georgia where he earned his bachelor's degree. Ed passed on his deep love for the Bulldogs to each of his three surviving sons, Andrew J. McCumber (Alexis) of Mount Pleasant, SC; Matthew B. McCumber of Taylors, SC; and Michael T. Adams of Utica, NY. Some of Ed's happiest memories were the times he got to spend between the hedges with his boys.

After marrying the love of his life, Maribeth Schawe, he moved to Anderson, SC in 1985. Ed was originally a member of St. George's Episcopal Church. Though he later became a member of Grace Episcopal Church, he remained a faithful lifetime attendee of St. George's Oyster Roast.

After moving to Anderson, Ed first worked for Maynard's Furniture in Belton, SC. In 1992, Ed joined Old Colony Furniture in Greenville, SC as a sales associate, and would work there until his passing. During the course of almost three decades, Ed would help thousands of customers from all walks of life find beautiful pieces of furniture for their homes. Ed cared deeply for all of his customers, and was known to often go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure their happiness.

The furniture industry was everything to Ed. His boys spent their youth playing hide and seek in the Old Colony showroom, traveling sales reps were frequent guests of the McCumber home, and a yearly pilgrimage to High Point for Market was a mandatory religious observance. Ed was also frequently known to embarrass his family by flipping over pieces of furniture in public "just to see who made the piece."

His passion for furniture was rivaled only by his love for his family including the four-legged members. In addition to his wife and sons, Ed (or "Pop" as he had lovingly become known) is survived by his stepsister, Elizabeth Hill, of Taylors, SC and his five grandchildren, Mac & Mills McCumber, Ashleigh McCumber, and Loren & Ellery Adams. Ed is also survived by his beloved dog, Abbie, and his two "grand-dogs" Belle and a brand-new golden retriever puppy known at this time only as "Floof". Ed was predeceased by pets Zachary, Comet, Murphy, Holly and Luke and is no doubt spoiling them all in heaven as we speak.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that you do something Ed would enjoy doing, like sitting outside enjoying a cigar and a mystery novel, playing a horrendous round of golf and blaming it on your back, or calling up an old friend or loved one that you haven't spoken to in a while just to tell them a really bad joke or two and how much you love them.

If none of these options are appealing, or you just insist on making a memorial contribution, then we are certain Ed's only wish would be that you consider donating your time or money to the Greenville Humane Society or to your local animal shelter.

I knew Eddie in junior high and high school. Haws always such a kind, and well-manner young man.
I was so sorry to hear of his death. Please know that his family are in my prayers.

Ed was our “furniture guy.” He definitely had a passion for furniture but his real passion was his family - he spoke of his wife, sons, and grandchildren every time we saw him. We were sorry to hear of his passing and know he will be missed.

Ed was a good man. Did business with him at Old Colony for years (decades). Ed was a constant professional that was so proud of his family. It was a shock to hear of Ed’s passing. He will be missed greatly.

We just heard about our friend, Ed's passing and are so grieved by this. We give our condolences and our prayers for comfort to Ed's family. We knew Ed as long time customers of his at Old Colony. He was always kind and attentive and interested in serving our needs and we will miss him terribly.

Maribeth,Andrew and Matthew,
Your husband and father was a very special man. He loved each of you deeply and was proud to share your achievements to anyone who would listen. I am so sorry for the pain you three have had to endure in January and February but I am sending prayers of healing and joy to each of you. You know that is what he wants for each of you, right? Godspeed to you all.
