Iber Neal Sutherland September 19, 1933 - December 6, 2008 IVA, SC - Iber Neal Sutherland, age 75, of 806 Betsy Street, Iva, SC, died Saturday, December 6, 2008 at his residence. Born in Iva on September 19, 1933, he was a son of the late James Ferguson Sutherland and Lola Dixon Sutherland. Mr. Sutherland was involved with many community affairs in the Town of Iva. He currently serves on the Iva Town Council where he has for over 16 years. He has been a member of the Iva Fire Department for most of his life and received the Fireman Of The Year Award for several years. He was an E-4 Sergeant in the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion Post # 44. He will be remembered for his loyal dedication to the people of the Town of Iva. He is survived by his sons, James N. "Rubberhead" Sutherland, Chief Jimmy Ray Sutherland and his wife Angie, Asst. Chief Buddy Sutherland, and Chief Tommy Miller and his wife Sha, all of Iva; his daughters, Rachel Gaines and her husband Joel of Anderson and Chief Sandy Sutherland of Iva. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Brown of Iva; six grandchildren, Dean Timms, Amber, Jessica and Collin Sutherland, Austin and Luke Miller and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Madison Timms. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Diane Chambers Sutherland; five brothers, Herbert Dixon, William "Bill" Sutherland, Paul Sutherland, Amos Sutherland, and James Sutherland and a sister Bertha Grant. The Funeral Service will be held at the Iva Fire Department on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 2:00 pm officiated by the Reverend Charles Howell, Jr. and Reverend Gary Bill. Interment will follow in the Iva City Cemetery with Military and Fire Department Honors. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 8, 2008 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Iva Fire Department. Memorials may be made to the Iva Fire Department and Rescue Squad Building Fund, PO Box 486, Iva, SC 29655. The family is at the home of a son, Jimmy Ray Sutherland, 404 Washington Street in Iva. As with any loved one's passing, words of comfort are hard to express. With the focus of Iber Neal's community service in the spotlight, I hope that you realize the inspiration he was, to all those who knew him, outside of community events. I am proud that I had the chance for him to teach me the importance of family and friends. Not only did he provide tremendous service to the town of Iva, he also served as a mentor to his family and friends. Iber Neal taught me that success is not always measured by financial means and glory. Being a leader in his family was Iber Neal's greatest accomplishment. This is proven by the dedication and love that his family shows; to each other and everyone they know. I hope you all find comfort in knowing that he will be remembered not only as a community leader, but as a caring father, grandfather, and friend.
