John Fulweiler Obituary

SAUNDERSTOWN, RI- John Fortune K. Fulweiler, 86, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of January 13, 2026. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years Megan Fulweiler, his three children and their spouses: John K. Fulweiler, Jr. and Elizabeth Langston of Jamestown, Rhode Island, Justin and Delia Fulweiler of Bridgehampton, New York, and Wally Fulweiler and Dan Orchard of Arlington, Massachusetts; and his six grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law: Peter and Kimmie Fulweiler of Wilmington, Delaware.

John was born November 4, 1939 in Pennsylvania, to John H. Fulweiler and Susan C. Kennedy. He grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and New York City - spending his summers in Saunderstown, RI first with his grandmother, and then, raising his family there. He taught his children how to sail, explore, and be curious on the waters of Narragansett Bay.

John was an artist. He graduated with an MFA from Tyler School of Art. Time in Europe, included a stint at Birgit Skilds Print Workshop in London. Upon his return to New England, he spent his career teaching for over two decades at Portsmouth Abbey School and painting. He illustrated numerous children's stories, many of which appeared in Cricket Magazine. John exhibited his work both in the United States and abroad. In his later years he worked almost exclusively in watercolors with the goal of sharing the peace and serenity that he found in nature. He was an animal lover (particularly of odd dogs), a green thumb, and intensely true to his creative work. He will be missed immeasurably. Service will be private.
