Betty Honeycutt Obituary

Betty Jo Honeycutt

April 20, 1931 - October 3, 2022

Betty Honeycutt of Concord died peacefully the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 3, 2022, at St. Andrews Living Center where she had been cared for tenderly by that loving staff for the last year. Her daughter was by her side at the time of her death.

Betty, who may be best known as the co-founder of Team Honeycutt and Matriarch will be deeply missed by many professionally. This was the first real estate team in Cabarrus County. Spanning a career of over 55 years that started in Cheraw, where they moved when her husband, Ed, got his contractor's license and she sold the homes he built. Betty and Ed had two children, Diane and Eddie. After Ed died in 1970, Betty moved to the Concord area to be near her parents, Gwyn and Joe Helms. In 1978, she became a licensed realtor in North Carolina and that's when the magic started.

As a realtor, she mentored anyone who asked. Whether it was a simple question, a complicated problem, or an ongoing real estate quest for knowledge, Betty's door was always open, her phone was always ready to be answered and her calculator was ready to do the numbers with anyone who needed her. New agents would gravitate to her because she gave her contagious smile and her heart along with her expertise to all who thirsted to learn to do more than just a job. The word no, hardly ever surfaced in Betty's conversations. Even when her health and physical condition slowed her down you could still find her going to the office, getting her work done and excelling in every possible way. Driven by a passion to help people and make a difference in their lives, produced the perfect recipe for success for generations of families. Her love for real estate and her question of "how's it going at the office" continued till the end. And till the end, it was always more than the deal, because her heart never left any person or any agency needing help with anything less than her whole heart, mind and soul.

Known also for her philanthropic spirit, she leaves behind many who will miss her for her lifetime of giving and sharing and that big heart, her listening ear and her beautiful outlook on life. Combined with her love for her community, you could always count on Betty to go above and beyond what anyone ever imagined. She was a giving, caring and selfless soul.

Betty's love for life, her family and her friends gave her joy that personified how she lived her life. Always ready for a road trip with friends, a trip to Shatley Springs, a shopping trip, a meal of celebration, a card game or a trip to the beach, no one could make you feel any more special than Betty Honeycutt. Betty's warmth and genuine love for people was present this last year at St. Andrews where she treated all who helped her as family too.

Betty has received numerous awards over the years. These three truly speak volumes about how she lived her life, both professionally and personally. In 2015, she was a recipient of the Business Today Lifetime Achievement Award. After joining the Allen Tate Company, Betty was named the recipient of the Barbara Tate Legendary Service Award. And in 2018, she received the first ever Cabarrus County Association of Realtors Lifetime Achievement Award.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Boyd Honeycutt Sr.; and her parents, Gwyn and Joe Helms.

Betty is survived by her son, Edwin Boyd Honeycutt (Kay) of Irmo, S.C.; daughters, Diane Ree Honeycutt and Jeanne Rae Hodges; and granddog, Tate of the home; grandchildren, Blake Edwin Honeycutt (Sarah) and Jennifer Boyd Honeycutt Newman (Graham); great-grandchildren, Stetson Boyd Honeycutt and Sutherland Dean Honeycutt, and J.W. Newman; sister-in-law, Linda Honeycutt Penninger (William); nieces, Valerie P. Houser (Melvin) and Victoria P. Whittington (Kenny); nephew, Billy Penninger (Angie); along with many other nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express gratitude to the staff of St Andrews Living Center for the love and care given to Betty while she was a resident.

The service for Betty will be held at Central United Methodist Church, at 30 Union St. N in Concord, Sunday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary. A reception will follow in the Coltrane Room at the church.

Betty sold us our house in 1995. We stayed in touch with her and she sent a birthday wish to me each year. She was a wonderful person whom you would never forget once you met her.

I have sent a donation to CVAN in her memory.
