Ernest Wood Obituary

Ernest "Ernie" B. Wood, Jr.

July 10, 1952 - October 15, 2025

Ernest "Ernie" Blair Wood, Jr., born on July 10, 1952, in Gastonia, North Carolina, passed away quietly at home on October 15, 2025, at the age of 73, and entered his eternal home in heaven. A devoted husband and father, Ernest is survived by his wife of 49 years, Pamela Wrenn Wood; and a daughter Miriam Elizabeth Wood.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest B. Wood, Sr. and Dorothy Bell Wood.

Ernie embraced life with love, generosity, friendliness, bountiful energy, and purpose. He always helped and supported his wife and daughter in their interests and pursuits in life. He was known for striking-up a conversation with anyone and finding a common interest or friend. His happiest times in life were when he was giving his time, help, and/or material items to someone in need. Commitment to community was his chosen course of service to many people over his lifetime.

Ernie graduated from A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, North Carolina. in 1970. He furthered his education at Elon College studying political science. He received an Associate of Applied Science in Civil Engineer Technician degree from Wake Technical Institute. He was the student government President there for the1975 to 1976 school year.

Upon receiving his surveying license, Ernie established E. B. Wood Land Surveying in 1980. His 25 years of success in business is attributed to love of the work and perseverance during difficult economic times. He always said, "I do 80% of the job, I don't like for the opportunity to do the 20% I really enjoy." He walked many miles in Person, Durham, Orange, and Wake counties precision mapping land. He often talked about the fascinating discoveries in nature and hidden pieces of history he had the opportunity to see on the job. He ended his career working for Summit Consulting Engineers.

Ernie's talents and interests were diverse. Athletically, he was a long- distance runner for his High School track team, played baseball and semi-pro hockey, and climbed mountain rocks. His hobbies included carving duck decoys, gardening, woodworking and building, restoring cars, and duck hunting.

Civic-minded, Ernie campaigned and was elected to serve two terms on the Roxboro City Council (one on those terms as Mayor pro tem). He represented the city on the Kerr-Tar Council of Governments. He was a board member on the Person County Planning Board, Roxboro Chamber of Commerce (two terms as Chairman), and Economic Development Commission. He was a past volunteer fireman and Kiwanis Club Member.

A proud member of the Order of Demolay in his youth, Ernie built a strong foundation of leadership and brotherhood that guided him through life. He became an active member of the Masonic Order, where he served as a York Rites Mason and a Past Master of Lodge # 113, embodying the principals of integrity, charity, and brotherly love.

Ernie was a member and past Sunday School teacher of the Youth Class at Warren's Grove Methodist Church. He believed the Bible is the word of God, Jesus is our savior, and true wisdom comes from trust and reverence of the Lord.

The family is grateful for the professionals at Bayada and Heartland Home Health and Hospice providing skilled and compassionate care and support during Ernie's decline in health. The outpour of love and support from family, neighbors, and friends has remarkably blessed the family over the past months.

A Celebration of Life, officiated by Rev. Herbert Brown, will be held at Brooks and White Funeral Home at 2 p.m., Friday, October 24, 2025. A visitation will be held Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Brooks and White Funeral Home.

I came to know Ernie thru a fellowship and member of the Lone Goose Hunting Lodge at Lake Mattamuskeet. We spent many days and nights together preparing for and hunting geese and ducks there. Our paths infrequently met after those years but it was always that fellowship and smile that I will always remember. I'm soon to be 78 but although sadden to hear of his passing, he'll not be forgotten and know he'll be looking down from a better place.

BARBARA HALL - TRIAD LAND SURVEYING

Fly high Ernie! I met Ernie many years ago when I visited his office in Roxboro. We had hired him to complete a survey for us in that area, and it was such a pleasure doing business with him. He was such a kind person, and I am sure his friends and family would agree that he was an amazing individual and will be deeply missed.
