New York, New York -- Genevieve Kalled, 95, originally of Nashua, NH, and a longtime resident of the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, died peacefully on Friday, November 17, 2023, after a long illness.
Over Genevieve's long and full life she performed opera and musical theater with some of the most notable companies in the United States, and later mentored an entire generation of aspiring artists. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Genevieve was born and raised in Nashua, NH, daughter of the late John and Nasimi (Hitti) Kalled, and younger sister of the late James, Philip, Albert, Jacob, and Emil Kalled, and Vivian (Kalled) Walker. After graduation from Nashua High School, Genevieve attended Rivier College in Nashua and the New England Conservatory in Boston, where she studied music and voice.
Genevieve launched her stage career in Nashua in 1955 as a founding member of the Actorsingers, appearing in its very first production, Gilbert & Sullivan's Mikado. She sang opera across the United States, appearing with such companies as the Opera Company of Boston, Opera New England, and the New York City Opera. Genevieve was known for her powerful voice, impeccable technique and dynamic stage presence. No less accomplished in musical theater, Genevieve appeared in many well-known shows of the 1950's and 60's.
In the early 1970's Genevieve transitioned to teaching voice privately from her stylish Morningside apartment. Her students included broadway performers, rising stars of opera, and even a few rock stars. She loved her pupils and they loved her. She was devoted to her students, corresponding with them for many years and supporting them in their careers and lives.
Genevieve was a force of nature; the party only started when she arrived. Many will remember her joie de vivre, her singleminded determination to live her best life, and her conviction that everyone deserves a moment in the spotlight.
She is survived by her spouse, Elizabeth Kunzle, or New York, dozens of nieces and nephews, and many pupils and devoted fans.
