Dr. Arnold "Doc" Mulkey, Jr. Arnold Peel "Doc" Mulkey, Jr., M.D., 78, husband of Toma Wollam Mulkey, passed away Friday, February 15, 2019 at his home.
Born in Millen, GA, May 24, 1940, son of the late Arnold Peel Mulkey, Sr. and Victoria Davis Mulkey. He was a 1958 graduate of Jenkins County High School, a 1962 graduate of the University of Georgia where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta and a 1966 graduate of the Medical College of Georgia where he was a member of Phi Rho Sigma.
After graduating from medical school, Doc began his internship in Macon, GA followed by a three-year general surgery residency before joining the US Army Medical Corps. When he returned from Vietnam, he served in Fort Ord, CA earning the rank of Major. Following his military service, he completed a three-year urology residency and moved to Greenwood in 1975, joining Dr. Phil Bates as a partner in Greenwood Urological. He continued to grow the practice to include additional partners until his retirement in June 2014.
Doc was a member and former Deacon of First Presbyterian Church, the Southeastern Section of the American Board of Urology, the South Carolina Medical Association, and the Greenwood Medical Society. He was an Eagle Scout, former Burton Center board member and an avid sporting clay shooter and instructor earning the classification of Master class.
Doc loved hearing and telling a good joke. He also had an arsenal of stories ready to be told at any given time - after all, he was a urologist. While some had to be censored, all Doc jokes made you smile and possibly blush. A loyal Georgia Bulldog fan, Doc quarterbacked every game from his chair and never missed his nightly 6:30 meeting with Tom, Brian, or Lester to hear the news of the day. Doc was loved by his patients, many of whom openly shared with Doc's kids specifically how their dad helped them. It was awkwardly endearing. It has been said he may have made a few nurses at Self Memorial scurry when he stepped onto 5th West, but all who worked with him knew that he was firm, yet fair, and his patients were always his number one priority. Upon retirement, Doc became somewhat of a farmer and could be found cultivating fields on his big blue tractor. Friendships were also cultivated at morning breakfasts with the fellas as well as over the firing of shotguns while shooting sporting clays - something he really loved. And while he also loved a good banana pudding, crossword puzzle, and action filled "shoot 'em up" movie, his family was his true love. That love was evident in all he did through his often quiet acts of service to encourage, support, and provide for them.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his three children, Arnold Todd Mulkey (Alejandra) of Canton, GA, Paige Mulkey Cizon (Aaron) and Meg Mulkey Riley (Will), all of Greenville; grandchildren, Valeria Delgado, Sofia and Isabel Mulkey, Eliot and Addy Cizon, and Lydia, Carsyn and Liam Riley. He is also survived and loved by a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Monday, February 18, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Kyle Hite officiating. Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
