John Dence Obituary
Born January 1, 1940, in Elkton, MD, he was a son of the late Andrew and Ruth Steel Dence. He was a US Air Force Veteran, Vietnam Era serviced as a missile tech launch specialist. A 1957 graduate of Penn Joint High School in Pittsburg, PA, and a 973 graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University (NEE-Institute.) John retired from Eaton Corporation after 55 years of service in 2024 and was a founding member of Westinghouse since 1980. He played minor league baseball with the Cardinals for 2 years, was a Pittsburg teams' fan, a Penn State fan, and was an avid golfer.
He was a member of Northside Baptist Church and The American Legion Post 20.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 42 years are Thomas Hairston (Jennifer) of Greenwood, John Andrew Dence, Jr. (Shayna) of Smiths Sation, AL, and Scott Dence (Amber Joyner) of Brooklyn, NY; grandchildren, MaKenzie Hairston, Madeline Hairston, Major Hairston, John Andrew Dence, III, and Jayden A. Dence.
He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Dence.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 PM Friday, December 20, 2024 at Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Travis Agnew officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1-2 Friday afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church, 409 Northside Dr. W Greenwood, SC 29649.
Blyth Funeral Home & Cremation Services is assisting the Dence family with arrangements.
