John Grier Obituary

John Calvin Grier, 65, a resident of Troy, South Carolina, passed away at his home on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Born in Greenwood on April 25, 1960, he was the son of Elizabeth Gutzke Grier and the late Francis Calvin Grier. John was a graduate of Greenwood High School and the University of The South, Sewanee, TN with a degree in Physics. He was a dedicated tree farmer and faithfully served his church and community throughout his life.

A devoted member of Lower Long Cane Presbyterian Church, John served in many roles including Moderator of the Second Presbytery, Treasurer, and as a steadfast pillar and servant of the church. He was known for his commitment, leadership, and generosity, having served on numerous church committees over the years.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his brother, Francis E. Grier and wife Beverly of Greenwood; his sister, Kennedy Grier Proctor and husband Dan of Greenwood; nieces and nephews, Lori Proctor, Andrew Proctor, Hayes Richter, and Meg Grier; and four great-nieces and one great-nephew.

A graveside service will be held at Edgewood Cemetery on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at 10:00 AM, officiated by Rev. Eldredge Kelley.

The family will be gathered at the home of Hayes and Kyle Richter, 104 Lodge Drive, Greenwood, SC 29646.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Long Cane Presbyterian Church, PO Box 117, Troy, SC 29848.
