Lorraine Hazel Hummel Smith, 88, of Nashua, died Thursday, July 9, 2015, at the Vinton Lutheran Home in Vinton.
Lorraine was born on the family farm near Allison on June 29, 1927, to Luella (Russler) Hummel and Harry Hummel Sr. She was baptized on July 31, 1927, and confirmed April 6, 1941, at St. Jacobus Lutheran Church in Allison. Lorraine was raised in rural Allison attending Ripley Township country school and later Allison High School graduating in 1945. She attended Wartburg College and the University of Northern Iowa graduating in 1984 with her Bachelor of Arts Degree.
On July 23, 1949, Lorraine was united in marriage to David T. Smith at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. The couple spent their life farming together in the Nashua area. Lorraine also taught at several country schools in Butler and Chickasaw counties, Nashua Community School, St. Mary-St. William School in North Washington, and St. Joseph Community School in New Hampton retiring in 1990.
Lorraine's memory is honored by: five children, Jody (Ed) Calmus, of Lakewood, Colo., Marcia (Kendall) Taylor, of Dysart, Patricia (Kim) Spangler, of Ames, Michael (Rosalie) Smith, of Noblesville, Ind., and Mary (Dave) Jackson, of Lebanon, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Rolland (Phyllis) Hummel, of Reinbeck; and sisters-in-law Betty Hummel, of Waverly, and Diane Hummel, of Allison.
Lorraine was preceded in death by: husband of 65 years, David; parents; three brothers, Harry Jr., Lewis and Robert Hummel; son-in-law, Steve Hinds; daughter-in-law, Tammy Smith; grandson, Benjamin Jackson; and great-granddaughter, Allyson Taylor.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 17, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, at St. John's Lutheran Church Western Douglas. Burial will follow at St. John's Lutheran Church Western Douglas Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to
