Dr. Bonsett's contributions to protecting the history of medicine in Indiana have been experienced and enjoyed by many of us and much appreciated. He was unique in Indiana in recognizing the importance of preserving the history of medical education and practice.

Thanks for the privilege of getting to know your father. What a full and meaningful life! Few men, on their deathbeds, can look back upon such fruition. Our thoughts are with you Tom.

I was introduced to Dr. Bonsett by Dean Walter Daly when I joined the faculty at IUSM in 1989. Dr. Bonsett was one of the few faculty at the time interested in medical ethics as well as the History of Medicine. He was a wonderful colleague, excellent teacher and physician to so many. He was also a kind and gentle soul. His life was a blessing to many.

I met Dr. Bonsett in 1966 while working as an orderly at Community Hospital. I was in premed studies at the IU regional campus at the time. He was very friendly and we spent time discussing what I was going to do with my life. I told him I had considered applying to medical school but did not feel that I had money for that. He then hired me to work in his research lab and allowed me to work flexible hours so that I could attend medical school. I graduated in 1971 and practiced Family Medicine in La,Porte ,Indiana until 2011. Had it not been for his encouraement and help I would not have been able to accomplish this. He was a wonderful person and will be missed. Kenneth D. Shively, MD
