Frank Hrisomalos Obituary

Frank Nick Hrisomalos, MD

age 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 2, 2015 at IU Hospice House in Bloomington, Indiana, in the city of his birth, in the presence of his family and beloved wife Becky who selflessly cared for him day and night during his year and a half battle with cancer. He worked up until the day he fell ill. Frank was born April 1, 1929 to Nick and Katina Hrisomalos, from Rapsani and Larissa, Greece. Frank spent his childhood growing-up in and around his parent's establishment, Nick's English Hut, which has now become a college institution as well as a city landmark. He spent his childhood as the only son of two Greek immigrants who came to America to start a better life and seek the American Dream. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1946, and then attended Purdue University, and was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, graduating with a pharmacy degree in 1951. He returned to Bloomington, Indiana and practiced pharmacy for a short while(at Brummett's Pharmacy on Third Street) while at the same time taking classes at Indiana University to meet the requirements to apply to medical school. He married Athena "Becky" Anton in 1954 at St. Andrew's Greek Orthodox Church in South Bend, Indiana, moved to Indianapolis and graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1957. He moved back to his hometown with his beautiful wife and two young children (which would soon grow to four) in tow and started his solo Family Medicine practice on Kirkwood Avenue- just a few blocks from their home-now "People's Park", with Nick's being in between the two. He took care of patients seven days a week for 57 years, until he fell ill at work, necessitating his retirement grudgingly in 2014.He always said he would never stop working, but he finally had no choice. Roles reversed themselves, and the doctor became the patient. Over a career spanning 57 years, he saved lives, gave meaning to lives, and made a difference in so many lives.

Frank became the longest practicing physician in Monroe County and was very proud of that accomplishment. "Dr. Frank" as they would call him, began taking care of the grandchildren of patients he had actually delivered decades ago. He had a true love and tremendous enthusiasm for Medicine. He practiced during the grand days of the Family Practitioner-administering anesthetics before the subspecialty of anesthesia became further developed, and delivering thousands of babies, at all times of the day and night (even including one of his own daughters). He was exceedingly kind, dedicated, generous, wise and humble-he always wanted to talk about others, not himself. He sacrificed his own life and personal time to help others, and spent years on the Bloomington Public Board of Works, under several different Mayors, and the Director of Public Investment Corporation and Chairman of the Board for decades. He spent years as Director of many local nursing homes and had a special place in his heart for those patients. He believed in the dignity of all people, young and old. He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash as well as becoming a Kentucky Colonel, and on his 80th birthday, celebrated in a place of great significance in his life, Nick's English Hut, Mark Kruzan, Mayor of Bloomington proclaimed on April 1, 2009 "Dr. Frank Hrisomalos Day". Frank had a passion for so many things- from the Arts to IU Athletics; he had a fantastic memory-his knowledge of history was remarkable; he inherited his love of property and investing from his father, who many years earlier with foresights had purchased the farm land where Frank would later build his family home-where he lived, entertained and enjoyed his family and friends since 1963. Frank lived a magical and wonderful life, and left a legacy that will live on forever within all of us, and inspired all of his children to pursue the same passion of helping and healing. He will always be here, inside of us all, until the end of time.

Frank is survived by his wife of 61 years, Athena "Becky" Hrisomalos, sons Nick Hrisomalos (Joni), Tom Hrisomalos(Debbie), daughters Karen Hrisomalos(Gary Gettelfinger ), Elaine Coghlan(Kevin) and grandchildren Frank Hrisomalos, Emily Hrisomalos, Matthew Coghlan, Sarah Coghlan, Megan Coghlan, Nicholas Shirley, Alexandra Shirley, Addison Ahrendts, Olivia Gettelfinger, Christian Gettelfinger, Alex Jerden and Scott Jerden(Brittany). Preceding him in death were his father Nick Hrisomalos of Rapsani, Greece, his mother Katina Hrisomalos of Larissa, Greece, and his granddaughter Faith Coghlan of Bloomington, Indiana.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a Trisagion Prayer Service at 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, and 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Monday, December 7 at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 E Rogers Rd. The Orthodox Christian Funeral Service will he held on Monday, December 7 at 12 p.m. at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church with Reverend Father Peter Jon Gillquist officiating. Burial will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the All Saints Orthodox Church of Bloomington, Indiana 6004 S Fairfax Road Bloomington, Indiana 47401, or the IU Hospice House at Bloomingtonhospitalfoundation.org. Arrangements are under the direction of Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Sherwood Oaks Christian Church for allowing them to use their facilities for the Funeral Services. I live out of state, and did not here of Dr, Franks passing.until now..Wanted to share my condolences to the whole family, and many friends.......
.I use to work at Bloomington, Hospital., as a nurse, and I will always remember him as a man of great compassion...........Two things stand out in my mind, and i still remember them even though it has been many years now...I would like to share them both.................One night when working at the hospital on what use to be 3-North....several of us nurses stood back, looking on, as two very fine doctors stood silently down the hall conferring with one another..It was a Hallmark scene, as those two fine doctors were father, and son, ..Dr. Frank and Dr. Tom....It was so poignant at the time..The lights were dimmed, due to the lateness of the hour.,so they both were cast in a warm glow, as they stood conferring side, by side. Father, and son....It was a memorable moment seeing them like that........Son, following in his dads footsteps, and It is something i will always remember.
.One other memory.......When giving, or taking report we always referred to father, and son, as Dr. Frank, ad Dr. Tom... One night a new nurse asked who Dr. Frank was, and why we called him by his first name......One person said,' we call him that, as they are father, and son, and so nurses know who we are talking about , it was a little shorter too"....Dr. Frank will always be remembered for the , compassionate, and kind doctor, and man he was to everyone .
.My prayers, and thoughts are with his beloved wife, and his whole family....
I know too, that Dr. Frank is now, *In the arms of his Heavenly Father*....What a glorious place to be....We will see him again....God bless his family, and his many friends too.

My widowed mother moved with her three little girls to Bloomington in 1960 to finish her college education. She was just 40. I am her youngest daughter. I was going into 4th grade when we moved to Bloomington, and I'm now 64. Our little family of women came to Dr. Hrisomalos very early in his practice. Dr. Frank was so compassionate. He only charged my mother a very minimal amount to see us, as he knew mother's financial circumstances weren't good. He also served as mom's de facto psychologist many times, lending an ear when life got difficult. He helped her through the challenges of raising children as a single mother, at a time in history when the concept of "single mom" barely existed. He was a kind, compassionate man, and I will never forget the kindnesses he extended to our family. Thinking of all the Hrisomalos family at this time, and remembering Dr. Frank with much affection.

An absolutely wonderful man and physician who was our family doctor when I was a child and inspired me to go to medical school and become a physician myself. My condolences to his wife Becky and his children, especially Dr. Tom.

I did not know Dr. Hrisomalis but was a patient of Dr. Tom's. Dr. Frank and his wife had/have to be very special people to have raised such a compassionate and caring son as Dr. Tom. My sympathies to the family.

December 7, 2015

To all of the Hrisomalos family,

Dr. Frank was my physician and friend for over 40 years. In all of those years, I never heard one person say a negative word about him as either a doctor or a person. His compassion, generosity and, yes, skill as a physician were unparalleled in this city he loved so much.

I have many fond memories of Dr. Frank, but allow me to share just one with you. About twenty years ago, I mentioned offhandedly to him that Pat Murphy and I had gone to Chicago to take in a Bears game and make an obligatory visit to eat at Greek Islands restaurant. With a twinkle in his eye and that amazing voice, he gently chided us for not "inviting me to go with you." For the next two decades, I could count on at least one inquisition annually of, "So, Ron, have you and Pat Murphy made any trips to Chicago to see a Bears game and eat in Greektown lately?" It became our standing joke that never ceased to amuse me and him, even as a prostate exam may have succeeded that comment within minutes. I will miss him immensely and consider myself very fortunate to have known him as a doctor and a friend.

Becky & family. I am so sorry to learn about Dr Frank's passing. I had the privilege of working with Dr Frank both @ the hospital & he was my mother-in-law's Dr when she was in the nursing home. He was always so compassionate & didn't care how many questions I had he answered all of them. As a nurse he always treated me professionally & respected my thoughts concerning his patients. He always had a smile on his face. I remember hearing othe nurses from nursing homes say that he sometimes brought them pizza because he knew they were busy. He is someone I will never forget. Will be thinking of you all during this difficult time. He was proud of you Becky & his children & loved talking about them. God bless you all.

My first husband worked at Nick's when he was a student. He got to know Frank's parents and indeed the whole family. When he worked at the old Fireside Restaurant, Frank was one of the customers who asked for Joe to serve him. That was the early 60's. Frank later was our family physician and as recently as two years ago was two of my sons physician. A history of over 50 years. We have many 'Frank' stories, he played a special part in our lives. We will miss him.

We were so sorry to hear about Frank's death. It seems no matter how long you have someone, it is never long enough. As Dickens said, life is full of meetings and partings, but the partings are very hard. Our thoughts are with your family.

My husband and I want to offer our deepest sympathy to the Hrisomalos family. He was our Dr. and four generations of my family. Dr. Frank was more than a Dr., he was compassionate, caring, interested in our lives and offered all the time you needed. I always admired how he treated his staff. You could tell there was mutual respect there. He delivered our son and made a special visit last year when our son passed away at 36 to personally offer his sympathy, made 2 trips until he found my husband at work to tell us how sorry he was and to send his sympathy and sadness over our loss to me. He always remembered where we worked, consoled me through losing my grandma that he was also very sad to lose, and sent flowers when my mom died. We always left an office visit feeling better just because of his care. We could tell how much he loved all of his family and truly cared about his patients. We were blessed to have him as our Dr. He will be remembered fondly by so many and our community was a better place with all he did for the place we knew he loved and the people he touched. You will be missed Dr. Frank. Val and Dane Scott.

Dear Becky and Family,
Bloomington has lost another of its 'Great Men' with Frank's death. He was
an example of what makes Bloomington such a special and welcoming place; his warmth toward his fellow man was contagious. His life was an example for
others to emulate. May his memory be a
blessing.

December 5, 2015

I was a patient of Dr. Karsel till Dr Frank took over his practice. Dr Frank delivered my youngest daughter Oct. 4, 1958. He also delivered both her children years later. When my grandmother was too sick to go to the office, Dr. Frank went to the house and treated her at home. He helped my daughter through a very emotional time in her life and gave her sound advice. I am sure his family will never know the overall scope of this man's life and the impact he has had on several generations that he has treated. Me? He saved my life with his insight and skill as a doctor. It was truly a privilege to know him!! This community as lost a treasure....

December 5, 2015

Dr. Frank became our family doctor in 1971 at his office on Kirkwood Avenue. He delivered my son and daughter. He always listened for as much time as was needed for us. He was always kind, patient, and sincerely caring. His patients were always a priority before other physicians when they called him on the telephone. I am so blessed to have experienced what a family doctor needs to be for his patients something today's doctors could look to for the most prime example of the best of the best of doctors -- a true servant. My heart is saddened for all of his family. May peace and strength be your sails and God give you calm waters.

December 5, 2015

My prayers for Dr. Frank and everyone he loves -- especially my friend, Karen. Like Karen, I am proud that Dr. Frank brought me into this world. My mother (Maxine Brlcher) adored him, and we were all blessed that he cared for her until his death from Alzheimer's. We were one of many, many families whose lives were made better by Dr. Frank. I hope Karen and the rest of his family will find comfort in knowing that Bloomington is better because of Dr. Frank.

Our family doctor from the 60's until he retired, this is the guy who gave me shots, cleaned my ears, listened to my heart, drew my blood and certified my health for Boy Scout camp. Terrified in 1983, he was the only one outside of my immediate circle who I could comfortably talk to about what was going on at the time. That talk with that man probably saved my life. Rest in peace, Dr. Frank. You were one fine doctor and my friend.

I had the wonderful privilege of meeting Dr Frank while working as a nurse at a nursing facility. He was not only kind to the patients but to the nurses as well. I learned so many things from him. He loved teaching the nurses.. I'm saddened that we have lost such a wonderful caring man. A true Bloomington legacy. A true servants heart.

Dr. Frank would have liked this one!

December 5, 2015

I was thirteen years old when Dr. Frank became our family doctor. He had made a house call to my parents' house because my mother was too ill to go to his office. He delivered both of my children, one of whom was still his patient when Dr. Frank retired. He was always so kind to my parents. My father would have me take him to Dr. Frank's, not because he was sick, just because he wanted to visit with Dr. Frank, and Dr. Frank would sit, talk and listen. My husband and I remained patients of Dr. Frank's until his retirement. He was not only a wonderful physician to our family, but a great friend. You will be soooooooo missed. Heaven has received a wonderful, kind and thoughful man.

Let us all celebrate the rich Life of our dear friend and Colleague Frank Hrisomalos. For a very long time he mentored me when I arrived to Bloomington as a new physician in 1972. The community will miss Frank and fortunately we have Becky, Nicholas, Karen, Tom and Elaine. December 4, 2015

Just a note to let the Hrisomalos family know that my heart is heavy, along with theirs. What I am remembering about Dr. Frank as I write this is his kindness to our family. When i was very young, he made a house call in the middle of the night because my mother (Marie Peterson) was so concerned. I ended up having pneumonia! I also think of a decade ago when I was living with, and caring for my mother at the end of her life. We would go see Dr. Frank at the office. He would come into the exam room, sit down, and have a wonderful "visit" with mother. It would make her feel better (when there really was nothing he could do for her at this point).
What a "hero" he was to this community. Peace be with you.

December 4, 2015

Dr. Frank was never my doctor although i think he was one of the best. i worked as a nurse at Hospitality House and Fontanbleu where he was the medical Director. i witnessed his skill in the medical field. i watched his bedside manor with his patients. He gave them respect and never tired when they asked the same questions. He was compassionate about his work but it didn't stop there. He never belittled the nurses. he was always teaching and helping us understand what was going on. he never tired of our calls day or night. It saddens me to think that he suffered with a disease that he treated so many people. but i am sure that he would not have wanted any special treatment. Rest in Peace Dr Hrismolas. You won't be forgotten.

A loss of great magnitude. Dr Frank will be missed. Condolences to the family. Many memories of him when he would visit his patients at BCC, with his Bobby pins holding back his hair. A kind and selfless man who made the world a better place. I am a better person just for knowing him.

Dr Frank gave me my very first job. Worked with him for nine years. He also took care of my family and gave my dad and brother odd jobs to do for him! Learned a great deal from him which I carry through to this very day. He not only cared for his patients but I have seen him give patients money from his own pocket so they could get their medicine when they couldn't afford it. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
