Gerald Grounds Obituary

Gerald "Glen" Grounds 84, Martinsville, died Dec. 30, 2004. He was born June 26, 1920 in Paragon, IN to Ralph Williamson Grounds and Flossie V. (Murphy) Grounds. He farmed for many years near Paragon and in Green Township in Morgan County. In 1960 he joined the United States Soil Conservation Service as a planning engineer in Morgan and Owen counties, retiring in 1980. For the past 40 years he was a member of the First Christian Church in Martinsville, where he served as elder emeritus. He was an active member and past president of the Indiana Farm Bureau. He was a 1938 graduate of Paragon High School. He was a Sgt. in the U.S. Army during WWII, serving in the South Pacific as a military policeman. He enjoyed fishing, studying soil and being outdoors. He was a avid reader and storyteller. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the First Christian Church Scholarship Fund, 89 S. Main St., Martinsville, IN 46151. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6 at the First Christian Church, 89 S. Main St., Martinsville, bereavement meal to follow memorial service, with calling one hour prior to service. Survivors include wife Dorothy M. (Ennis) Grounds, Greenwood, IN; daughter Daina Chamness of Greenwood, IN; seven grandchildren Sean Murphy Gilson, Glen Michael Gilson and Evan, Susan, Lily, Ava and Katie Liang; sisters Martha Moore, Richmond, IN, Nellie Howard of Martinsville, IN, Sharon Partyka of Frederick, Maryland, Betty McGown of Stilesville, IN, Marian Stierwalt of Harriman, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by brother Ralph Grounds, Jr.; sisters Claire Finchum, Ruth Fawn Grounds, Geneva Grounds, Frances Cooper and Ethel Williams. Arrangements by Neal and Summers Mortuary, Martinsville.
