Harold L. Poole
1943-2014 - Late of New York City passed into the hands of the Lord on August 4, 2014 at his apartment in Manhattan. He was a graduate of Shortridge High School and an outstanding athlete both as a wrestler and in track and field. Harold had an exceptional physique being named the youngest person to win Mr. Indianapolis, Mr. Indiana and Mr. Universe at the respective ages of 16, 16 and 19 and Mr. America at 20, being the second youngest winner. Poole trained at the Hofmeister Studio in downtown Indianapolis representing Hofmeister in many contests.
Poole later wrestled professionally under the title of Prince Poole of Tahiti while tag teaming with Bruno Sammartino, then heavyweight champion. Poole managed the Cheetah Discoteche in Manhattan while simultaneously operating his own health studio in Union City, New Jersey. Harold was also the bodyguard of British model and movie star, Twiggy, and traveled with her throughout the U.K., USA and Latin America.
Harold is survived by his brother, Sandy Poole, of Los Angeles; his longtime friend and companion, Marliese Schmatolla of Titusville, Florida; and many good friends and training partners in the Indianapolis area including Earl Slaughter, Tom Hoshour and Loren J. Comstock who was his coach, advisor and good friend for over 55 years, and Larry Biehn of Lancaster, California.
Poole contributed to many health, diet and exercise periodicals, freely while liberally giving advice to up and coming bodybuilders. He was named to the Bodybuilding Hall of Fame and was recently honored as the greatest teenage bodybuilder of all time. A memorial service will be held in Titusville, Florida at a later date. This is my uncle and I am extremely saddened by his passing. I am sad because I had not seen him in 7 years and had no idea of his passing until 2 days ago. May his soul rest with my father in heaven...

I found this "story" of Mr. Poole very interesting. I graduated from Indianapolis George Washington H.S. in 1972. Many of our athletes worked out at Hoffy's. I also love the fact that he was Twiggy's bodyguard. I'm sure he had some fascinating experiences.
May he rest in peace now in God's heaven.

As a freshman at SHS in 1958 my Mom suggested I get my 140 lb body into high school sports. I chose wrestling and my first teammate was Harold. Big mismatch! We practiced moves on the mat on all fours. When the coach said "Go", I tried to make some moves but I couldn't. Harold immobilized me just by locking his arm around my body, then laughed and let me loose to give me a chance. I remember Harold for his calm kind demeanor.
