Leo Joint Obituary

Leo Robinson Joint

Devoted husband and loving father, Leo Robinson Joint, 61, of Indianapolis, IN passed away after an lengthy illness, on April 26, 2015 at Community Hospital North. He was born February 26, 1954 in Elkhart, Indiana, the son of Leo J. and Dolores L. Joint, also of Elkhart, Indiana.

A 1972 graduate of Elkhart High School, Leo was a member of the 1971 basketball State Championship runner-up team that lost to East Chicago Washington in the State Finals. He excelled in a variety of sports, and while in high school, was also a member of the tennis and baseball teams. Leo attended Indiana University from 1972 to 1975 majoring in Journalism, and then went on to devote nearly a lifetime to the craft he dearly loved.  His journalism career took him from The Elkhart Truth, the LaPorte Herald-Argus, The Vidette-Messenger of Valparaiso, The Gary Post Tribute, and most recently The Indianapolis Star.  As a sports writer, editor, and designer, he was an Associated Press award-winning editor. Journalism was truly his passion, and he was fortunate enough to be able to spend decades working in the field he loved best.

Leo is survived by his devoted wife of 20 years, Kathy (Mishler) Joint, as well as the light of his life, his daughter Ashley M. Joint, and his two beloved grandchildren, Lily and Liam.  He is also survived by his sister, Lynda (Dick) Vance of Carmel, Indiana, three nieces, four great nieces and two great nephews. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Kim Spencer and his brother-in-law John Spencer of Mesa, Arizona, who were not family by blood, but were family to him, in his heart.

At Leo's request, no services will be held, so in lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you please consider giving a donation in Leo's name, either to the Indiana Donor Network Angel Fund at http://indianadonornetwork.org/foundation/angel-fund or via the Angel Fund, c/o Indiana Donor Network Foundation, 3760 Guion Road, Indianapolis, IN 46222. His wife would also like to personally thank the amazing hospice nurses and staff at Community Hospital North who were so loving during the last days of his life while he was in their care - they are truly angels here on earth.

My heartfelt condolences to Kathy and all of Leo's family. Leo gave me my first big break in the business, hiring me as a sports clerk and then an assistant sports editor at The Vidette-Messenger. I'm eternally grateful for that. I learned so much from him. I also loved the time we spent together playing softball. Those were great days. Rest in peace, Leo.

Leo: I see you now teeing off with your Aunt Lois, telling jokes, and just generally causing havoc in heaven with her. - Listening to your laughter, your cousin Bernardine
