Here is Mr."Burly" at the 1962 Watermelon Bowl-PS 84 vs PS 66. He was an inspiration to all of us when he told about when he played football with 2 broken collar bones at Tech High School. Even when I got paddled with the "board of education", I felt that he really cared about me in the post- paddle lecture. A Great Man, Coach, Father, and Hero!

I can see your face as clearly as yesterday on the School #84 football field inspiring us, leading us, and helping us to develop as young males. You are a part of who each of us are today and I was always grateful for this though never having the chance to tell you later in life. You have been a part of many conversations through the years with fellow classmates. I wish you all the best as your journey continues. Show us the way, TAT(Tom Teel).

I thought Mr. Burleson was a mountain of a man when I encountered him at School 84. I know that he saved my life because of his instruction in drivers' education.
We played "You're dead!" If a driver got out of the car without looking behind him at oncoming traffic, the rest of us in the car yelled, "You're dead!" and the driver owed each of us a stick of gum. He saved my life by telling us to not over-correct into oncoming traffic if you happen to run off the right side of the road. The first time that happened, I got back in my lane and thought of Mr. Burleson...and every time since.
I'm sure that you have many happy memories of him . You have my sympathy.

I am so saddened by the recent email I received about Mr. Burleson. I was fortunate to have been a student at School #84, in Indianapolis, in 1957, when Mr. Burleson began as a teacher. He was the first male teacher for most of us and I have always remembered what a great influence he was for me. A larger than life and a bit intimidating, athletic young teacher that the kids loved. I still remember him at our 8th grade swimming party. I was disappointed he could not make our 50th reunion in 2009 as I looked forward to seeing him again. My sincere condolences to the Burleson family. Janice Nielsen, School #84 Class of 1957

I was a student at both Arlington and John Marshall high schools when he was there. Mr. Burleson was strict, however, very fair to everyone. His presence demanded respect without request for it, and he in turn gave respect to all. I'm 60 now, and still regard him as one of the most genuine individuals I've ever met.- Dan Zack (Indianapolis, IN)

Many times I sat in your passageway at JMHS as I did messenger duties for Ms Hardwick and would watch the young men come in with bad attitudes and leave with respect and remorse. A great leader and role model is how I will always remember you. My deepest condolences for the Burleson family. Sincerely, Monika Walraven - JMHS - Class of 1970.
