Matthew Nielsen Obituary

Matthew A. Nielsen

40, of Indianapolis, passed away on January 12, 2016. Matthew was one of the most easy-going and helpful people that you could ever have the pleasure of meeting. Matthew worked for Gaylor Electric, in addition to being a coach for his children's basketball and soccer teams. He was also a "dance dad" and the former coach of the Franklin Central Girls Basketball team. Matthew enjoyed being a part of the St. Jude Men's Club and cheering for the Seattle Seahawks, the Tar Heels, Eastern Eagles and Huskies.

In addition to being a great coach and friend, he was also a family man who will be missed by his wife of 12 years, Teresa; his children Emma (11) and Evan(5); his Mother, Ruth Nielsen; his sister, Emily (Derek) Hughes; his nephew, Hunter; his mother-in-law, Karen (Randy Comstock) Metro; his father-in-law, Bill Metro;  and his brother-in-law, James Metro. Matthew was preceded in death by his father, John.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 15, 2015 from 2-8 p.m. in Little and Sons Stop 11 Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a trust fund for Matthew's children, in care of the funeral home.

I met Matt through the St. Jude Mens Club, and became friends playing indoor soccer. He was a fun guy to be around and was always positive no matter if we were getting smoked. He will be missed, and our prayers are with Teresa and his children.

Teresa, I'm so sorry for the loss to you and the kids as well as everyone who knew Matt. I look at the photo gallery and all I see are smiles, kids and family. I know Matt had many close friends and hopefully you can lean on them when things get tough. I enjoyed all the times I had when Matt was at EWU and worked for us in Intramural Sports with Todd & Jeremy, he and his buddies were quite a handful but always stuck together, true friends. Deepest sympathies for you, he will be missed in a big way.

Teresa,

I am so incredibly sorry for you and your family's loss. I am very disappointed I never had the opportunity to meet Matthew, but Rick Herbertz has spoken very highly of him to me. I know your time here at Qdoba has been very short, but you are already a very valued member of our family. Tim Casey was genuinely saddened to hear of your family tragedy as well. We stand ready to support you in any way we can. We know you need the time with Emma and Evan and we respect your need to grieve. We are keeping you and yours in our prayers and thoughts. Please extend my personal condolences to Matthew's Mother, Ruth, and to his Sister, Emily. All my best to you and yours. If you need to speak to me, please do not hesitate to reach out at any time. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Nielsen Family,

I am very sorry for your loss. I met Matt in 1996 while working at the Bon Marche, and played basketball with him for a couple of years. Though we lost contact over time, I have often thought of him as I mention him when I talk to friends about the best athletes I've known personally. I realize now that I've been selling him short: he's also one of the best people I've known. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

He truly was a light and the community has lost a true hero and a good man. May his family be comforted by the promise HE gives us. Lifting the family up in prayer.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I really enjoyed the time I had with Matt. We always had a good time working together and grabbing a Starbucks in the morning. Even after we both left to pursue other jobs, he would still call me and see how I was doing! He was a good person and a good friend!
Rest In Peace Matt!

January 14, 2016

Dear Matthew,
I met you in December 1992, when Aaron and I had our first date at your Juanita vs LWHS basketball game. We followed up the game with a fun night at your parents' house...the first of many more to come. If if weren't for your family, quite simply...I wouldn't have mine. I still can hear your dad's booming voice singing The Lord's Prayer at our August of 1994 wedding, and I can clearly see your young, fresh face as a groomsman for Aaron...the little brother he never had. Please tell your dad that I can still "hear" his amazing baritone singing voice, and I can still see his shoulders rise and fall during a fit of laughter. As for you...you were a chip off the ole block representing all of the good from both of your parents. May your spirit live on in your precious children and in all of the hearts of the people who have loved you. Cheers to a wonderful glass of scotch with your dad, we miss you both terribly. Much love, Julie and Aaron

Oh my heart is so sad learning of Matts passing. We are praying for understanding and peace in your minds and souls. As Christ followers, we are not to fear death as it is just our time to go home. However, those left in the flesh are left with a large void. I'm just so sorry and I'll keep on praying for you.
