Meredith Opel Obituary
Indianapolis - Meredith Grace Opel, 20, Indianapolis, tragically passed away November 24, 2017. Meredith was born March 4, 1997, in Indianapolis, to Douglas and Julie (Bartram) Opel, who survive.
Meredith attended St. Mark Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Roncalli High School in 2015. She was a junior at the University of Southern Indiana, where she was studying as a Presidential Scholar. She was majoring in sociology and political science; Meredith was determined to make a difference in the world. She was a free spirit, joyful, adventurous, loyal, goal oriented, and inspiring. Meredith recently studied abroad and loved traveling to thirteen different countries in Europe, taking in as much as she possibly could. As a student at USI, she became active with campus outreach and greatly enjoyed being a part of the Orlando Project. Meredith will be fondly remembered by her loving family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, David Bartram and her paternal grandmother, Donna (Morgan) Opel. Meredith's sister, Mallory Elizabeth Opel, also tragically died on November 24, 2017.
Meredith's family includes her loving parents, Doug and Julie Opel; siblings, Morgan and Bryce Opel; beloved niece, Camilla Rose; maternal grandmother, Janet Bartram; paternal grandparents, Ronald E. and Carol Opel; a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Friends and family will gather to celebrate the life of Meredith Grace Opel on Friday, December 1, 2017, 3 to 8 p.m., in the gymnasium at Roncalli High School. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, December 2, 2017, in the gymnasium at Roncalli. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Orlando Project, c/o Campus Outreach at the University of Southern Indiana or to Roncalli High School. The Compassionate Friends is an international grief support group for parents, grandparents and siblings who have suffered the heartbreaking loss of a child. Our only mission is to provide comfort, hope and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or daughter, brother or sister, or grandchild, and to help others better assist the grieving family.

Meredith touched my life and, I'm sure, countless more when she came to Orlando. Two summers ago when Meredith came to Three Broomsticks she made me laugh with her Meredithisms, engaged me in meaningful conversations, and was always pushing the Broomies to come out to the Outreach Events. For seven years, I've seen many people come through that restaurant; but the group that came from Outreach that year was different. And Meredith led the charge(obviously) . She helped me see my relationship with Christ in a new light, and helped bring hope and an openness to God that I had not seen before when I was working there. I always say that Jesus friendships are the sweetest friendships. After the summer Meredith and I became friends; we continued to stay in contact throughout the year. We were so overjoyed to see each other the following summer. Meredith jumped out of her seat at the table she was eating at. She ran over, both of us screamed as we embraced in a big hug in a cafeteria full of Universal employees. It's funny, because that only happened with Meredith. She had such a big heart and had a such a big personality. Her love for God and His Word showed though her life. I wish I had all the right words to commemorate Meredith properly, but I don't. I was privileged to have Meredith as a friend. More tears will come. However, I'll continue to laugh, share memories, and remember how wonderful Meredith was with our friends. To the Opel family:I'm praying that God gives you all comfort and peace during this time.
