Rev. Patrick J. Kelly, 72, Indianapolis, died December 30, 2003. Father Kelly was born July 10, 1931 in Indianapolis and was ordained May 3, 1958 at St. Meinrad Archabbey. He served as assistant pastor, St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Indianapolis, and high school instructor at Scecina Memorial High School. In 1966, he was named superintendent, Sacred Heart Central High School. In 1969, Fr. Kelly was named superintendent of Roncalli High School and was instrumental in selecting the name for Roncalli. In 1970 he was appointed associate pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church while continuing as superintendent of Roncalli. In 1971 he served as the associate pastor of St. Luke Catholic Church and was named director of St. Mary;s Child Center in 1973. In 1974 he was appointed pastor of St. Ann Catholic Church while continuing as director, St. Mary;s Child Center. In 1975 he was appointed associate pastor, St. Luke Catholic Church.In 1978 Father Kelly became a full-time instructor at Cathedral High School and served as principal from 1984 until 2002 when he was named chancellor. In 1995 he was named sacramental minister of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church and continued his roles at Cathedral High School.Father Kelly had been the Chaplain of the Indianapolis Colts since their arrival in Indianapolis in 1983. His passion and love for the Cathedral and the Colts were unequalled.Father Kelly was a priest and educator of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis since 1958. He was associated with Cathedral High School since 1972, serving as a board member, Chaplain, and Academic Dean. Under his leadership the school met great success in all aspects of its spiritual, academic and extra-curricular programs. In 1989, Cathedral was recognized nationally as a "School of Excellence" by the United States Department of Education.In 2002, Father Kelly retired as Principal and accepted the newly created position of Chancellor of Cathedral High School. In addition to his duties as Chancellor, Father Kelly continued to serve as the school Chaplain and reminder of our heritage.In the Fall of 2002, Father Kelly was presented the highest award Cathedral can bestow upon an individual, The Bishop Chartrand Award. The Chartrand ring is presented in honor of the founder of Cathedral, Bishop Joseph Chartrand. The award has only been presented to 12 other recipients in the history of the school. Father Patrick J. Kelly Hon. '89 was just one of the original eight members of the board formed to keep Cathedral High School from closing in 1972. His commitment and long-time service to Cathedral will be sadly missed.Father Kelly was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. and Kathleen (Toon) Kelly; his brothers, Robert C. and Terrance and his sister, Mary Helen Kelly Godwin. Survivors include his aunt, Martha Kelly; sisters-in-law, Barbara Kelly, Denver, Colorado, and Edna Kelly, Henderson, Nevada; three nieces; a nephew and several cousins.Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at Cathedral High School. Visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 5, at Cathedral High School. Burial: Our Lady of Peace Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Father Kelly;s name to Cathedral High School, 5225 East 56th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46226. Arrangements entrusted to Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary.Father Kelly was nothing short of an icon at Cathedral. He was an honorary graduate of the Class of 1989. All of Cathedral mourns the passing of this Cathedral legend.
