Philip M. Morton, MD

82, died June 30, 2013. Born in Sheffield, PA, reared in Kinzua, PA, schooled in Rochester, NY, he was the first born to Marie Jones Morton and Paul F. Morton.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sally, and children Lynne (Edwin) Locke, Keith (Alice) Morton, Gayle (David) Holtman and grandchildren, Philip Morton, Kristina (Chris) Knapp, Brian Morton and Kevin Locke. Also surviving is sister-in-law, Mary Morton of Shrewsbury, NJ; brother, Paul (Sandy) Morton of Ponte Vedra, FL and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Collins (Charlie) of Herkimer, NY and nieces, Kathy Morton, Dana Morton-Emery, Kellie Collins-Sklarz and nephews, Paul Morton, Chris Morton and Michael Collins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lee Morton; nephew, Lee Morton Jr.; step-mother, Helen Morton and half-sister, Ann Morton.

Dr. Morton was a graduate of the University of Toledo and Syracuse Medical School at SUNY. He interned at Indianapolis General Hospital (Wishard) and trained in internal medicine and psychiatry at IU Medical Center. He served with the US Public Health Service and the US Bureau of Prisons, being stationed at McNeil Island Penitentiary.

He had a private practice of psychiatry, was associated with Methodist and Wishard hospitals, and served 38 years on the medical staff at Larue Carter Hospital. He was Associate Professor of Psychiatry at IU Medical Center.

He was a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a 50 year member of the Indianapolis Medical Society and a member of the Indiana Psychiatric Society where he was President on two occasions.

In his youth he was president of his high school student body and a member of the Rochester All-Scholastic Teams in basketball and football. He attended the University of Toledo on a basketball scholarship and was team captain his senior year. He also played college baseball and was offered a signing bonus to play with the Cleveland Indians.

He was an active parishioner at Trinity Episcopal Church where he sang in the choir and served on the vestry. He played piano and attended many seasons of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He was founding board chairman of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra (Musicians of the Cloister). He coached Little League at the Ransburg Fields and girls tennis at Ritter High School.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 12 in Trinity Episcopal Church, 3243 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, 46208. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., with music beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 13 in Trinity.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Music Program at Trinity Episcopal Church.
