Peabody, MA - Philip James Snodgrass, M.D., died December 16 at the age of 91 in Peabody, Mass., his home since 2005. He retired in 1999 as Professor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, where he had served as Chief of the Medical Service at the Roudebush VA Medical Center from 1973 until 1995. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, he had previously been Chief of Gastroenterology at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He enjoyed family vacations in Maine and traveling across the United States as well as in Europe, China, Australia, and Africa. He was a member of the Indianapolis Men's Literary Club, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, and All Souls Unitarian Church. A lifelong learner and constant reader, he was happiest when learning something new or sharing his knowledge with those around him. Reading of Philip's passing saddens me greatly. IWe met through the Harvard Club of Indiana many years ago. If memory serves me correctly,, his presidency immediately followed mine. While we have run into each other occasionally in Cambridge, I was looking forward to May 30 where we would all march in the 70th Reunion Processional.l I'm sure he will be with us in spirit.

Dr. Snodgrass personified "a scholar and a gentleman", as well as a superb physician, scientist, administrator, and athlete. It was a pleasure to work with him in volunteer activities in Indianapolis for many years. His good manners, amiability, kindness, cheerfulness, empathy, articulate and straightforward speech, common sense, insight, and dignity were much appreciated, and an inspiration.

The Bellard family sends our condolences to Marjorie and the girls on Phil's passing. He and Marjorie were great adventurers, and good friends to the Indianapolis community. Phil made a difference in whatever he took on: work, play, community, family.

The medical community who practiced at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center will always remember Phil's great leadership for the Department of Medicine. He ran a excellent medical service assuring quality of care for the US Veterans served in our facility. He was a true gentleman and scholar who was respected by all who knew and worked with him. Our condolences to Phil's family in this time of loss. I personally will have great remembrances of our time as colleagues in practicing medicine at the VAMC!

We will miss our dear friend and so enjoyed many pre-dinner glasses of wine and dinners with him (and Marjorie). He told wonderful stories of his life and times - always with a little humorous twist and a little smile of enjoyment in telling them. Reading his memoir made us laugh out loud in parts where he reiterated some of his medical student and medical resident experiences. He was bright and engaging and he will be missed.
