Randall Owens Obituary

Randall Kent (Randy) Owens

Randall Kent (Randy) Owens, age 67, died on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at Life's Journey Hospice in Avon, Indiana. Randy was born on April 19, 1953 in Greencastle, Indiana to the late Dorotha (Pritchett) Owens and Hancel (Hanny) Owens. Randy was the youngest of six children. His two brothers, William (Bill) and Gerald (Jerry), both preceded him in death. He is survived by three sisters, Janet Lewis, Linda (Willis) Parker and Shirley (Mike) Larsen, and his sister-in-law Judy Owens.

Randy spent his early years growing up on the family farm near Coatesville, Indiana. In 1978 he moved to the Stewart Home School near Frankfort, Kentucky where he lived for 11 years. In 1989 he moved back to Indiana, where he began residing at Countryside Group Home near Danville. Until his final illness, Randy spent the rest of his life at Countryside, where he enjoyed the companionship of his housemates. Randy attended the former Noble School, now Noble of Indiana in Indianapolis, because at that time there were no services available for children with special needs in Hendricks County. The lack of available services led to his parents working with other parents with special needs children to establish the ARC of Hendricks County and Opportunity Cottage, now Sycamore Services in Danville.

To his siblings, Randy was a brother who gave them so much to remember, to be grateful for, and to love. They know how fortunate they were to have him as their brother as well as how much they learned from him. They cherish their memories of time spent with him as he enjoyed the simple things of life: Randy as the cookie taster or enjoying everyone singing to him on his birthday; Randy mowing the lawn at the family farm or watching the planes come in for a landing at the airport in Indy; or how much Randy enjoyed the wind whistling through the pines on a windy day. Randy enjoyed going for a ride to almost anywhere, especially with the radio playing his favorite kind of music and him sipping on a Pepsi. No family member ever purchased a new vehicle without him wanting to go for a test drive, especially if it was a pickup truck. Most of all, they remember what a joy it was to see his excitement when they were lucky enough to chase side by side with a train on the adjacent railroad tracks near Fillmore.

In addition to his parents and two older brothers, Randy was preceded in death by his nephews Ronald Lewis and Eric Parker and great nephew Jason Lewis. In addition to his three sisters and sister-in-law, he is survived by nieces Toni Lewis, Becky McMullen, Cris Ann Voda, Janessa Greeson, and Lisa Parker-Gummere; nephews Rick Lewis, Brad Lewis, Michael Larsen, Scott Larsen, and Brian Owens; also ten great nieces, five great nephews, and three great-great nieces.

Randy is also survived by his other family at Countryside Group Home. The family will be eternally grateful to Evelyn Hefley, manager at Countryside, as well as Kay, Angie and multiple other staff who cared for him. We would also like to thank Dr. Thaddeus Poe and Debbie Miller at American Health Network in Avon, Dr. Rick Robertson and Dr. Stephanie Litz for the many years of care given to Randy. We give special thanks to Dr. Scott Oosting, Dr. Nicholas Wilhite and the many nurses and staff members at Hendricks Regional Health for the excellent compassionate care they provided during his recent hospitalization. And we will forever be grateful to the staff at Life's Journey Hospice in Avon for their compassion, care and support.

A private family Celebration of Life service will be held on December 20, 2020 at Bousley Funeral Home in Coatesville with burial in New Winchester Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Randy's memory to the Hancel and Dorotha Owens Sycamore Day Services Program Fund at the Hendricks County Community Foundation (HCCF). Donations may be made either on the HCCF website or by a check payable to HCCF with the fund noted in the memo line and mailed to: HCCF, 6319 East US Hwy 36, Suite 211, Avon, IN 46123.
