William Ernest "Ernie" Dickerson 87, of Indianapolis died on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born in Pittsboro, IN on Nov. 18, 1922, the son of the late Guy Lorenzo and Delpha Fern (Dinsmore) Dickerson. In Lebanon, IN, on April 6, 1943, he was married to Mary Maxine (Stevens) Dickerson who survives. They recently celebrated 67 years of marriage. His family lived in Hendricks County in the Pittsboro area until Mr. Dickerson was in the 7th grade. He moved to Boone County and was a 1941 graduate of Pinnell High School. During WW II he was a member of the 104th Infantry Division-Timber Wolf Division-in the U. S. Army. He served as a staff sergeant and received the Purple Heart. In 1950, he completed a BA Degree at Canterbury College (formerly Central Normal College) at Danville, IN. After studies at Butler University, he received a MA Degree in Education in 1960. He taught a year (1951-52) at Round Grove, IN. For 11 years he taught at Whitestown. He then was employed in the Pike Township School in Marion County at Eastbrook Elementary School. In 1963, he continued in Pike Township as principal of Central Elementary School for 3 years and then as Director of Elementary Education until he retired in 1986. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His favorite past times included various activities including playing golf, Jigsaw Puzzles, and Crossword Puzzles. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and liked to work in the yard. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion at Whitestown and Disabled American Veterans and Military Order of Purple Heart. Funeral services will be held at Myers Mortuary in Lebanon at 10:30 a.m. on April 17, with Visitation 4 to 8 p.m. on April 16. Interment will follow military rites in the K of P Cemetery in Lizton, IN. In addition to his wife, other survivors include Children Ernest Ray "Ernie" Dickerson, Lemon Grove, CA, Steven W. Dickerson and wife, Linda, Jamestown, Evan D. Dickerson and wife, Cricket, Whitestown, Dwain Dickerson and wife, Debra, Indianapolis, Janalene Sharp and husband, Paul, Indianapolis, a brother Lester Dickerson, New Brunswick, IN; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Deceased are 2 brothers, Francis Dickerson and Wendell Dickerson. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences:
