Alan was a dear friend. I will miss his intellect and humor and, particularly, our dinners together as he spoke with such great love for and pride in his two daughters. In his last months, he showed noble courage and grace as he dealt with his intractable pain that left him progressively restricted in his physical activities but never diminished the sharpness of his mind. He inspired and educated many people and will continue to live in their memory of him.
