ALICE E., of Huntingdon Valley passed on May 3, 2016 at the age of 98. Alice graduated from Lower Moreland High School in 1935. After high school she went to University of Pennsylvania to receive her degree in education. She spent 42 years working in the Lower Moreland School District where she devoted her life as an elementary educator at Red Lion Elementary School. Later in her career she became the Principal of Pine Road Elementary School. Alice received her master's degree from Temple University. Alice's dedication to public education was by far her greatest accomplishment as developing herself as an educator and administrator. She was a volunteer for 29 years at Jeanes Hospital Auxiliary along with Jeanes Hospital Volunteer program. In addition, she was an active member of Huntingdon Valley Women's Club, Soroptimists, and Pine Road "Recs". Along with her volunteering, Alice was an avid bridge player and loved knitting. She enjoyed being with family and took her siblings on a cruise to celebrate. She is survived by many family members: her sister, Beatrice R. Carson; nieces, Judith C. Schreiber, Jacqueline Hartman, Ruth Holly Ridgway; nephews, Russell Tompkins, Robert Tompkins, Charles Tompkins, William Ridgway, Wayne Ridgway, Richard Ridgway, and James Ridgway. She is survived by an abundance of great nieces and nephews along with great-great nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded by her siblings and two nephews: sister, Mary Emma Tompkins; brother, William Ridgway and wife Laura Ridgway; brother, Richard Ridgway and wife Jean Ridgway; nephews, Ralph E. Carson, and Barry B. Carson. A Memorial Service honoring Alice E. Ridgway will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. at Abington Friends Meeting House, 520 Meeting-house Road, Jenkintown, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jeanes Hospital Auxiliary, 7600 Central Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19011, or Abington Friends Meeting House, 520 Meetinghouse Road, Jenkintown, PA 19046 in memory of Alice E. Ridgway.

Today I discovered the loss of my beloved 3rd grade teacher (1955). She was one teacher who helped me to become the person I am today. And, yes, she tossed many blackboard erasers at me, as well as most classmates. I will remember her always. Rest in peace.

I remember Ms. ridgeway. She really taught me some important lessons as a young girl. She was always so fair and lovely. We were all blessed to have had her as a Principal. Rip.

We all remember Mrs. Ridgway! She left wonderful memories for us children. She went way beyond her job as Principal and was truly a gift to the children at Pine Road Elementary. I don't know many other people who remember their principal of an elementary school. All Lower Moreland kids remember her though!

Since the news of her death, many of us who were her students have been sharing memories on a Facebook page for Lower Moreland High School alumni. She was my principal at Pine Road. Many of the people from my years recall the Tiger Hunt! She is probably entertaining young children in heaven with the Tiger Hunt. May Alice E. Ridgway's memory forever be a blessing.
