Arnold Holtzman Obituary

Holtzman Arnold Age 93, of Glen Mills, PA, beloved husband of the late Phyllis Holtzman, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2025. Born and raised in West Philadelphia, son of William and Rae Holtzman, brother of Lorraine Cohen and the late Shirley Martin, Arnold was a proud graduate of Overbrook High School, Drexel University, and then Lehigh University where he earned a PhD in metallurgical engineering. His tenure at the DuPont Company,1958 to 1988, was marked by his work on a series of innovative and remarkable projects. First, at what was then Eastern Labs, he led a team that developed explosive metal cladding to make the stock used for American coins. Next he sold explosives and safety equipment to coal mining companies. After DuPont transferred him to Wilmington headquarters in 1970, he moved into food and health care products. Notably, he led the team shepherding balloon angioplasty from prototype to medical device, revolutionizing treatment for clearing blocked blood vessels. What previously necessitated open-heart surgery became a same-day outpatient procedure. A half-million Americans now undergo this procedure every year. After he retired, he led the Delaware Valley chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and volunteered for decades at Chester Bethel Church Thrift Shop. Most of all, he loved and cared for his family. Arnold was the real deal, a man of great integrity who always lived up to his word and inspired those around him to, as he counseled, "do good in the world". He is survived by his three children and their partners, Rosalind Holtzman (Eric Gonzalez) of Elkins Park, PA, Linda Holtzman (Tom Kirwan) of Marlton, NJ, and Bill Holtzman (Juliet Goozh) of Reston, VA. He was "Pop-pop" to his grandchildren Marina Gonzalez (Steve Shenkman), Celia Gonzalez (Donna Chesman), Kira Kirwan (May Sophia), Joshua Holtzman and Emma Holtzman, and had just become a great-grandfather to Rafael Shenkman. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to contribute in Arnold's memory to HIAS PA (hiaspa.org), the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice. SCHOENBERG MEMORIAL CHAPEL
