Barry McAndrews Obituary

McAndrews Hon. R. Barry Of Doylestown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 23, 2024, surrounded by his children. He was 91. Barry was the devoted husband of the late Elizabeth Ann McAndrews, and loving father to 5 children. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Robert Barry McAndrews, Sr. and Mary Anne McAndrews. Barry grew up in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia, attended St. Athanasius Parish grade school, graduated from LaSalle College High School (1950), LaSalle University (1954), he received his Juris Doctorate from Villanova University School of Law (1957). Upon graduation from Law School, he received rank of Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps (1957-1962) stationed in Hawaii with his wife and young family. His legal experience was broad and varied, including Chief Counsel at Certain-teed Corporation (1962-1967), an Assistant Public Defender (1968-1969), acting as co-counsel in the notorious Mary Mamon murder trial, and a Partner in private practice for 24 years (1967-1991). Barry reached a career milestone when he became a judge for the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas in May 1991. He was appointed by Governor Bob Casey, then elected for a 10-year term as the eleventh judge on the bench, quoted in rare interview "I want to be a fair judge who is willing to listen patiently, that's what lawyers and clients expect. Win or lose, if they've been treated fairly, they respect the system." Barry went on to be selected as President Judge in 1999, before he retired in 2003. As President Judge, Barry was a leading advocate to build the controversial new courthouse in Doylestown to serve the growing population of the county. After much debate and opposition, consensus was reached, and the new Bucks County Justice Center opened in January 2015. Barry created a warm and loving home for his family, and he was a living example of a Catholic life. He treasured his friendships, old and new, rarely missed an opportunity to dance with his wife, Liz, and loved a good joke! He loved the Jersey Shore in the summer, talking Eagles sports with his sons, politics, history, and music. It was the simple pleasures he appreciated the most: spending time with family and friends, a home cooked meal, and the perfect martini. Barry will be deeply missed by his children Michael McAndrews (Kathy), Elizabeth McNulty (Patrick), Brian McAndrews (Karen); 8 grandchildren, Barry, Jack, Shawn, Elizabeth, Kate, Michael, Madeline, and Emily; many dear friends and relatives. In addition to his wife and parents, Barry is preceded in death by 2 children, Barry McAndrews and Mary McAndrews. Barry's Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 3rd at 11:00 A.M. at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 856 Euclid Avenue, Warrington, PA 18976. His family will receive friends from 9:30 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. prior to Mass. Interment will follow with military honors at St. John Neumann Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Barry's memory may be made to St. Robert Bellarmine Church at the above address. www.shellyfuneralhomes.com
