Bart Lippincott Obituary

LIPPINCOTT


BARTON HIRST LIPPINCOTT, Publisher, 82, died on March 25, 2008, after a long illness. He was the son of Bertram Lippincott and Elsie Hirst Lippincott of Penllyn, Pa. , and the great grandson of Joshua Ballinger Lippincott, who established the J. B. Lippincott Publishing Company in Philadelphia in 1836. He was president of the publishing company from 1978 to 1981 and served on the board since 1954. Mr. Lippincott was also the great grandson of Joseph Wharton, who founded the Wharton School of Business Administration at the University of Pennsylvania. He died at Cathedral Village in the Andorra section of Philadelphia.
Mr. Lippincott is survived by his wife Carol Helms Lippincott, four daughters by a previous marriage, Louise Lippincott of Pittsburgh, Deborah Lippincott of Philadelphia, Frances Lippincott of Ringoes N.J., and Elizabeth Lippincott Rosen (Charles) of Manhattan Beach CA; as well 4 stepchildren, Frances E. Newbold (William) of St. Thomas V.I., Elizabeth E. Miller (Gerald) of Piedmont CA, James M. Earle III (Gerardine) of Malvern PA, and Murray Earle II of St. Thomas V.I.. He had 9 grandchildren and 6 step-grand children. Of his siblings, he is survived by his brother Bertram Lippincott of Rosemont PA; his sister Elsie Chadwick of Duxbury MA, and was predeceased by his sister Joanna Sorlien. A Memorial Service will take place at the Green Street Meeting, 45 W. School House Lane Phila., PA 19144, on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at 11 A.M. Burial will take place in Jamestown RI, during the summer. In lieu of flowers, the family would appre-ciate contributions to Morris Arboretum and Yale University.
