Bernice Schacter Obituary

SCHACTER
DR. BERNICE ZELDIN SCHACTER. Immunologist and research advocate, died at home on September 21, 2008, after an extended illness. She is survived by her husband of 40 years Dr. Lee Philip Schacter and 2 daughters, Sara Schacter of New York City and Beth Schacter of Los Angeles as well as her sister Lee Zeldin and her brother Michael Zeldin.
Born in 1943, Bernice, the daughter of Dr. Aaron and Mrs. Jenny Zeldin, earned her AB from Bryn Mawr College and a PhD in Biology from Brandeis University. As a research immunologist she held faculty positions at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Wesleyan University, The University of Delaware and the Case Western University School of Medicine. She was Associate Director of Immunology for Bristol Myers Squibb leaving to become the Vice President of Research at BioTransplant in 1991. She was the author of several books about biotechnology and drug development as well as Vice President member of the Board of Trustees for the Connecticut Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as well as a Research Advocate. In Delaware after 2000, she was a member of the Board of Trustees and a Research Advocate until her death.
